help with tuning 172

  clio 172
Hello,

I have owned my clio 172 for nearly two years now! I have had alot of sports cars before, but only jap... Now I need to know what is the best/easiest way of getting a little more from the engine? I would love to go the whole hog with a charger, but have not found anyone that will do it for me. I am open to suggestions from very basic to advanced.

please let me know if there is anyone anywhere that will do work, and how much it will cost(ish)

I know its a very vague question, but I'm hoping that One of you guys who seem to know alot about the car will have done something along the lines of what i'm looking for and you could share your knowledge.

thanks in advance to all

depends on your budget. For about 600 quid you could get a decat pipe, induction kit and a remap. Prob get you 10-15 bhp

for about 2k you can get decat, induction kit and a cams package (billet cams, inlet matching, remap). That should get about 25bhp.

3.5k you can get throttle bodies, probably around 45-50 bhp extra.

for 5-6k you can get turbo conversion and a remap, prob and extra 90 bhp.

yeah,

thanks for that, I don't really know where I can get that kinda work done... I have to get me timin belt done, they said it needed doin at 45,000?

you reckon if I get the throttle bodies and decat and induction kit with cams package would be any good, prefer not to go with turbo, seems like alot of work, and time by the looks of the other posts on this site.

Yeah imo turbo is a bad idea on clio unless you gonna uprate pretty much everything like clutch, gear box etc, cos they aren't built for that kinda torque.

Would be extremely quick with throttle bodies. Ask thejesus on here, he's got a throttle bodied ph1 172. Beats imprezas wrxs etc. The general concensus on the cams package alone is that its good for increasing mid range torque and power delivery. But throttle bodies will make it seriously quick. Theres a few tuners that do work like that at GDI (greydevilindustries) and Yozzasport

not that it makes much difference,

but is there a particular throttle body brand that will be better? I have noticed that the clio although very fassst, lacks a little in the mid range, not a major problem if you wanna rev the stones out of the car, but I also like driving the car as a normal car... I think that Maybe by the sounds of it, and by some of the other posts on this site throttle bodies and exhaust would be the way to go. Don't want the look or sound to be very far altered.

I am in Ireland, so I don't think there is much chance of getting the work done over here, this is why I think I will have to got to England, unless anyone knows any decent tuners over this side?

pretty much the only clio 172 I've seen over here, so can't compare mine to others...

p.s. any idea's whether 45k is time for timing belt? they trying to charge me £600 for the work, so wanna make sure that is not better and cheaper in england, and make sure that its needed.

  clio mk2 p1 1.4 16v
for the timing belt are you going to renault to keep with warrenty or would you settle for a garage, renault specelist type garage i mean not a back street, b'cus the garage route is about £300-£350 renauls will always be about £500-£600 way of life my friend

  clio 172
am based in dublin.

that price was givin by a renault garage... NO warrenty issues. my car is 2001, I just keep it very clean and mileage down.

ah the timing belt is no big deal, just really thought that seen as I was doing some kind of work to it anyway, might just get that done at the same time.

this site is very good, alot of helpful people. glad I asked, cause had nearly wasted bout 2k on stupid other parts!

would ideal be to get throttle bodies done, and cam's and exhaust???

would need a very good garage to get that all together really I think. even if I bought the parts from an English company, don't really think that I'd get them reliabley fitted over here, unless anyone knows something I don't about garage in Ireland?

I would say that Martin Tracey in Westward Engineering would be the only man in Ireland I'd trust with money to get something like that set up on my car.

Based in Enfield, Meath.

Send us a PM if your around somenight with nothing to do. I'll show you mine if you show me yours. I've only ever seen three PH1 RS Clios bar my own (one from Killarney, one from Cork and one on O'Connell Bridge) and one PH2 (out around Clonsilla direction).

  clio 172
yeah, me clio looks pretty much exact same as your pic. I would be in the clonsilla are alot!

although thanks to the advise here, I reckon I may be without it for a while while I get the work done...

Think I'll just be sensible and drive it to england and have some well experienced guy do it. there is alot of work to be done by the sounds of it...

already looking forward to it.
