HELP!

  Iceberg 172
I have a mk2 172 60k.
Last night when i went to start the car the battery was dead, i got a jump start and everything seemed fine. I was driving down the motoreway and all of a sudden all of the lights on the dash started flickering. Once i sped up they went steady again n non of the indicator lights were on but when i went to change gear the clutch went stiff like it is when the keys are out of the ignition and the car is stationary. I pulled into the nearest car park and found someone to try and jump start me so i could get home, unfortunatly this wouldnt work. I left the car parked up and went back this morning and changed the battery. When i turned the ignition on the clutch remained the same, it was stiff and had hardly any movement, it felt more like the brake and when i put my foot on the accelerator nothing happened, it didnt rev whatsoever, the engine just remained running like it would if you wernt touching anything. I turned the ignition on and off and after about 4 attempts of starting the car again it began revving. I just managed to drive home but the clutch remained stiff all the time and when i reached about 4500 revs the engine was making a clunky sort of noise. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be and how after the initial problem seemed to be the battery it has turned into this?
Thanks

Firstly the resistance on the clutch pedal is constant whether the car is running or not.
I would investigate the"clunky" noises first as they sound most serious which tbh could be number of things in either the engine or transmission.
I am afraid with the info given it will be impossible to diagnose and you really need to have it looked at as you could make it worse by running/driving it.
Try one of your local independant garages or AA or RAC.

So do you think that it could need a new clutch?
I dont have any idea what the noises from the engine are and couldnt really explain to give any more info so i think im gunna have to take it to get looked at asap and not drive it for the time being.
Also, ive only had the car about a month and i dont think any of the belts have been changed on the car yet, do you think this could be related as i know Renault recommend changing them at 72k but a lot of people say advise 36k?

Could be a bad earth, which would explain the lights.
Can't help with the clutch though, should always feel the same.
