High millage 172? ok or stay clear?

Sold my last 172FF 18months ago but wouldnt mind another...

Have been looking at a 52 172 with 70k on the clock, do these engines last or will i be looking at a new engine in 10k? its had an ok life but not pampered.

I will be taking it to the Ring and will also be doing a few track days in it so dont want something that cant take a bit of stick.

No FSH but a few stamps and cambelt last year... bloke who owns it is a freind, has had it from new but isnt great on the old servicing!!

  Civic Vtec y0
If he is a decent guy then I would take it for the right price if i were you, 70k is high, but its not huge if you know what i mean?

If its had the cambelt done and been well cared for it wouldnt put me off. Providing it was the right price.

4K maybe a little less

He's a good bloke, doesnt rag his cars just doesnt take as much care as i do.

He had a large service last year (independant garage) and had gaiters, window regs, exhaust, shocks, cambelt done etc

Yep I got it,

Goes like a rocket and (touch wood) nothing has needed doing apart from a bolt on the alternator.

Engine is quieter than my last with half the miles. Only thing that does eek me are two rattles, made worse by the Sportline springs I put on but something i'll get round to sorting soon.

Only thing i would say is if it has high(ish) miles make sure belts are done, rear discs are ok and the exhaust is'nt cheese.

Hi pal, thanks for the quick reply.

How many miles are you on now?
Whats the most expensive thing you've *had* to do to it?

So far my list to check is:

Cambelt / auxilary belt,
Brakes - disks + pads,
Gearbox,
Engine mounts,
Exhaust - should of been replaced by now.

Had it since end of October, bought it with 67k on it now has just over 70k

Nothing had to be done but just because I want it spot on i have put decent tyres on it, Sportline springs and before I take it to the Ring i'm changing the pads and front discs. Think it may need a ball joint but It drives great.

I wouldnt worry to much about the front brakes, £58 for discs and pads front and back are also cheap. It's the rear disc's with bearings that set you back £140/170 plus fitting if you dont do it yourself.

My mate has one will 80k on it and nothing has gone wrong with that either, thats also coming to the Ring at Easter.

Bills like the rear brakes I could cope with but obviously a bonus if it's all been done already. I'll probably take it to a garage I know if that a family friend owns to give the basics a once over.
