Hillpower group n ecu- idle speed

Had the group n ecu from Nick a few weeks ago. Have noticed that cold idling is now a bit odd. After driving along and then say pulling up at lights, the revs tend to surge to 1500 or so and then settle back down again. This is very noticable when crawling in a queue of traffic - each time you edge forward you get the surge. Any idea if this is to be expected?

Also, even when warmed up the tickover is quite uneven - I guess this is just down to the state of tune?

By the way, I had the Hillpower induction kit fitted at the same time, though I cant see that would make any difference.

sounds like dirty injectors - try running an injector cleaner through.

Someone mentioned (a whille ago) about a valve/switch or somthing like that that could cause what you have.

Try posting the question for an "RTE" there a 2 or 3 that are members.

Has been run from new on 100% Optimax. Wouldnt that do the job of keeping the injectors clean?

On the other hand - it has had very light use... 8000 miles in two years, mainly local. Could be getting a bit cacked up.

Is the group N ECU on a mk2 172 and NOT at cup? If so, ill be very happy if everything is working ok as ill be purchasing one of these asap!

How much was the ECU? I could fit it myself as its pretty easy

Nick can get you a GroupN ECU for either a 172 or a Cup

The poor running will almost certainly be down to the mapping of the GroupN ECU, not the new air filter (Ive got one of these on my std 172) or clogged injectors. Simon on here ran the ECU on his Mk1 172 and reported the same uneven idling. Think about it, the ECU wasnt really designed for road use!

Nick should be able to iron out any little problems though?

By the way, have you noticed a marked performance improvement?

It is a MK2 172.

If blocked injectors (even with Optimax) how do I sort this (assume total stupidity!)? Actually I doubt this is the case as it was fine before fitting the ecu.

Not much difference performance wise at normal road speeds, though the missus thinks it is a bit quicker. Suspect it is keener above 60 but need to prove this on track. Price is £200-ish but check with Nick. I know it is defo the group n ecu as the car now revs to 7800!

sounds like the ecu mapping is causing this and like previously said its software not designed for the normal road after all so its probably normal.have you tried replugging in your original ecu to see what happens?

Jay the original one just plugs back in and works right away like it had never been out.

True. The ECU on the Cup ticks over normally. Dont notice anything untill you give it some!

Must say the ECU doesnt do as much as I first thought, got standard one back in the now (warrenty issue) and I hand on heart cant notice any difference. This was highlighted as well when I raced GZA Cup (ktec exhaust only) we were neck and neck me pulling a bit in 3rd (higher limiter) but when I changed into 4th he made that gap right back up....

Im with you on the relative difference between stock and group n, i.e. very little to nothing. I guess I was persuaded that it was a good idea to deal with the potential problem of leaning out at high revs with the induction kit.

Keep telling myself its all just snake oil, but cant stop thinking about what to muck about with next

I think the leaning out is just a rumour and nothing more - the HP air filter kit doesnt lean the engine enough, if at all, at high revs to warrant worrying about.

I feared as much that the ECU doesnt make much of a difference. Did you speak to Nick about the new inlet manifold mod and possible the cams?

Yep - saw the inlet manifold when I was there. However, Ill need some convincing before chucking any more money at the little 172.

Thinking about it I reckon it is a bit quicker with the current setup - enough to make it even more edgy than it was before .

sounds like you may have a duff one - speak to Nick at Hill Power and he will tell you whats what. If your tickover fluctuates upto 1500rpm it sounds like it is over compensating for something and if it is ok with the old ECU I recon you have a duff one, I am sure Nick will swap it over for you if you ask and he says it is not right.

My car was definitely running lean when I had the HP IK fitted - according to Power Engineering. Ive never done stuff individually but the combo of the IK/ECU/IM/Zorst does seem to make a real difference, on the road.

Edit: I have also noticed the slightly wild idling on occasion......
