Horrible Clutch / gearbox rattle ? HELP

  Ultra 197 ex 172 Cup
Hi Guys,

MY Cuppy cup cup, has developed a horrid rattle noise when you put your foot ont he clutch and rev a little bit, also when driving you can sometimes hear it. i had new clutch done 5k ago, and cambelt done the other week, so don't know what this could be, cars done 72k now, havn't changed the gearbox oil yet, could it just be really low and thats makign the noise ? it doesn't happen all the time. ie i noticed it this morning, when i was reversing off my drive, got to work and it had stopped, drove home without hearing it. went to the girlfriends didnt' hear it, left her house and it was back, sounding nastier than ever. it sounds like a big hole or something, and some thing rattling around ? any clues on what i can check tonight ? before i call RAC tomorrow am ? :dead:

Sounds like a release bearing. If the oil was low then it could cause bearings to get shot.

whats that then ? should this have been identified when they did the clutch, they fitted a new cable for me.

PS had/have same issue. Mech friend said putting an oil additive in the gearbox can sort it without having to replace gearbox. Might be worth looking into.

low gear box oil would not affect the release bearing in the clutch. low gearbox oil would damage the bearings in the box. does the noise go away when you press the clutch?

no the noise comes when you put the clutch in, when the clutch is out their is no noise ? and it doesn't matter what gear you in. ie in neutral with the engine on, i press clutch and their it is tap tap tap tap tap, rev it and the taps are louder and faster, it must be something to do with the clutch. somethings loose or something

If you can see under yr air filter their is a clutch fork under it with the cable attatched. check all the spacers are all on the same side. and try and try and give that clutch fork a wiggle with the cable disconnected. also check yr n/s/f inner drive shaft boot for leaks. if turn it onto full lock and use a torch to have look you should be able to see if it has leaked or not. this is the only place these gear boxs will leak and if they refit that driveshaft wrong it can leak out:(

yeah, i had a look around the cable and it seems fine, their was some slight wear to one of the power steering pipes (i think) that is kinda down their near the clutch cable, which has some big weights on, its very easy to remove from the clutch fork, also the clutch fork moves easily with the car in neutral and engine off, i would have thought it would have been stronger. i couldnt' really see that anything else would be touching the weights to make the rattling noise. as i am presuming that the small wear marks / scratches on the pipe are from where they fitted the new clutch and scraped it up a bit.

suppose their aint much else you can check. their gearbox is really awkward to take out of them so their is bound to be scuff marks. you can check your gearbox oil level though. if you have got a standard filter you might not be able to do it without any tools. About half way down the fornt of gearbox their should be a platic plug/screw thing. if you can get this un done and just dip you finger into the hole you should be able to feel for gear box oil. because that plastic plug acts as the level plug. but i'd be taking the car back to where you had the clutch fitted and give em loads of grief. also if its making a chattering kind of noise they may have not put all the bolts back into the clutch that hold it onto the flywheel or snapped a few of them. it wouldn't show straight away:(

yeah, i will try the oil thing, thanks mate, i seen the plug, its a bit oily around it, i had mr clutch do the clutch, i was suppost to take it for them to check in another 200 miles. - 72458, but when i looked at the reciept warranty thing it says i should have also taken it in for inspection at 69958. the clutch was changed at 69458, it has a thing when they initial and sign it, is it worth me scribbling this or saying i didn't realise, i thought that was when it was changed ?

decided to take my car to Mr clutch, and when i was going to take it out the garage, i found a bit of metal on the floor, so anyways drove it 10miles to mr clutch, abotu 400yards away and it got so so bad, anyways dumped it their and said i found this bit of metal on the drive, they said it is a clutch strap, whatever that is, so i think the clutch has fallen to bits, not bad for 2k mile, LOL anyways the clutch says it has a 20k warranty, so i will see what they say later today.

Got my car back today, they had it since tuesday am, They replaced the clutch free of charge, and i drove off with a big smile Mr Clutch is the best and cheap tooooooooooo 350.00 inc vat for clutch and new cable 20k warranty, no quibbles, excellent i will be recommending them.

Anyways, this now my 4th clutch on my clio cup, i must take it to a rollign road see what it is producing, cos to bust 4 clutches in 72k miles, it must bee doing goooooooood. AND NO i don't ride the clutch, this is the only car i have owned where i have had clutch problems, and its my 6th car.

Next time it goes i think i need clutch upgrade.

its a cup Fred, its gotta be driven like every road's a track :) heheee, i do like to slide around roundabouts, and thrash the heck out of it. BIG GRIN. Waiting to meet you Fred so he can try my cup :) i think renault let a secret powerhouse slip out the factory

  Ultra 197 ex 172 Cup
dunno, it was mr clutch so i presume it was an oem one, unless they just shoved a cheap one on, shall i as them ? it was cheap 300 exc vat for the clutch, cable and fitting.

is the standard clutch covered under reno warrenty?

The original one as fitted to the car or do you mean an original one if you go in and buy?

1 year warentl on all bough bits as for the original you could argue fitment for purpose etc buts its difficult to prove one way or the other so forget trying to get Renault to pay for it if the stock one fails obviusly due to a failed part then they will replace but that doesn't happen realy.
