while is was fiddling about with my (car as you do), i held in the trip counter button on the speedo area and turned on the power (all the way except to actually start the engine). after continuing to hold the button in for a second or two after turning the power on, all the dials/lights etc in the pannel started to light up/move though thier rotation. it looked like it was some type of self diagnostic test. i suppose it is handy to find out if your fuel gauge is working or not for example.
lights even lit up for features that i dont even have like traction control.
try it, it wont bugger your car, just press the button again for about a second and it stops.
(although, you guys probably know this already)
ps. my car is a mk2 ph2 1.2 16v ( if it makes any difference)
