How did it go this wrong?

  Golf 7.5R & Clio 200
The process:

Sanded with fine grade sand paper to put a key for the primer to grab hold of.

Cleaned and dried

Light mist of plastic primer, re sanded cleaned and dried

Layer of primer applied, left to dry then another layer.

Left over 24 hours to fully dry then a light black misting put on. Waited about 4 hours until touch dry, and applied the first black coating.

Looked good, went to check an hour or so after and this:

Only happened on that one bit of trim, the rest are perfect

oops!

A reaction between the paints / primers I guess. Were they all meant to work together?

What did you use to wipe clean between coats?

I used 2 x Grey plastic primers and 1 big gloss black. Between coats nothing, I just left them all indoors. The wash after the primer had been left a day was just with fiary liquid and water  but the rest have worked, s'why it's confusing me.

Guess only solution will be wait until its fully dry, re-sand and try again :(

Based upon what you've written, you've left some washing up liquid on this bit.

There was no need to use anything other than water TBH, not only that, but you have to make sure it's 1000000% dry, use a hairdryer or similar, then let it cool to room temp and leave it some more so there's no condensation build up or similar.

I'll leave it until tomorrow night to fully dry, then sand it all back. Then give it another go - I'll also leave the fairy liquid in the cupboard this time haha

Would a wipe down of Eraser or something similar help? Or just leave it as is

One other thing, I'd give it a damn good sanding, it could also be lack of adhesion in certain parts.

So where that's gone bad, it could be that your keying underneath is a rubbish (on the original finish).

Good move on keeping the fairy liquid away, think about it, you're making something "rough" (on a super fine level), then applying a substance that is very greasy and silky. You need the primer for the paint to stick to, you don't need to wash every last bit of primer away, as long as the surface is clean of dust, which water will do fine.

Fair point - May try the next grade up from 600 grit. Cheers fella :)

sand it back enough to remove the contaminated and affected areas, and provide a good key over the whole surface for new paint, shouldn't even need anything as coarse as 600 IMO to key it as you'll start to notice it through the finish.

Prior to spraying again, just give it a good wipe down with a new clean MF to remove any dust etc. shouldn't need any more

Try using a tack cloth after cleaning and if possible try to get your hands on some pre-paint.

That piece of trim is rubber covered from memory. You might have trouble getting paint to stick.
