How do i fix the water leaking into the spare wheel well ?

  Ultra 197 ex 172 Cup
Hi,

I have started to make preparations for my homemade sparewheel sub box like that geeza did (nice work) , but i need to fix the water leak first.

I have searched the forum a bit but can't find the thread.

So basically, the spare wheel well gets water in it, quite a lot, and also occasionally under the back seats, but that dries out ok, just the water remains in the boot, so how do i fix it ? is the leak from the rear window seals ? can't see where else it comes in really.

If no help i'll just drill some drain holes in it, and put some underseal around them to stop it rusting, and just varnish my wooden sub box, when i make it.

Prevention is better than a cure. I would say that the tailgate is mis-aligned for whatever reason and the seals are lettin water in. It may be possible to adjust the catch on the bootlid so it sits tighter. Alternatively, tweak the seal all of the way round and test with a hose pipe.

I've seen this problem mentioned a few times . I had the same in my 172 , water in the spare wheel well , under the back seats .

I was told the cure was to remove the 2 black grommets , one either side when you open the tailgate , silicon sealant in the holes and replace the grommets . If you leave the tailgate open while the sealant goes off it would better .

couldn't be bothered to open a new tube of sealent, so i put some uho glue around them (popped them out and put glue all over it and stuck it back it). i don't think it can be them they are too small. Plus I don't see how the water can get to under the rear seats !! and I get quite a bit of water in mine, i think i am going to have to strip the rear cards out and check these window seals, but thats a job for another weekend

I get water under my rear seats in my 182 have looked everywhere and cant see where its coming in!

blimey! calm down man, dont throw your toys out the pram when someone says they dont like ur spoiler!

water is usually a tailgate problem... or as they have said above... investigate the holes where ur new "spoiler" has been fitted!

listen, its a common fault, happens on no modded cars, so their, happend on my original 172, happends on this, happens on other peoples cars. the spoiler doesn't actually attatch to the car chassis, it attatches to the boot !!!, the boot is a seperate item, and if water were to get inside the boot frame, the water would not enter the car, !!! so there.

but dont u think water may then run DOWN the boot and into the bootspace?! it doesnt have to get into the chassis (LOL) to get thru into the car! has ur spoiler been secured with screws? if it has, then check they have been sealed properly!

I have the same problem im gonna dry mine out and silicone around the seals etc to see if it makes a difference.

no, cos the boot frame, doesn't have any holes in it, that would allow that, the holes in the bottom of the boot come outside the boot seal, so if water was to go into the boot, then it would just come out on the rear bumper :)

Cool, not noticed this thread. The spoiler isnt to my likeing, but each to their own I guess.

Have you perchance drilled through the renault spoiler and put holes in ones car?

Yes dave & other, but like my post above, that would not let water come into the boot of the car. as the original cup spoiler is in place, and the k-tek spoiler bolts onto the cup spoiler, and intact.
So are you saying that cup spoilers leak ? unless you are assuming that holes are drilled all around my boot and i have screwed the whole boot shut ? i presume your lack of knowledge, means you have never removed or fitted a spoiler in your life time ?
as you are unaware they just bolt on using the existing holes. Also i presume you are not familiar with the clio boot.
It is a single piece of metal, much like a car door, it is hollow, like a car door, and if water was to go inside a car door, it would come out the bottom of the car door through the holes renault put in the bottom of the doors for the water to drain through. The Renault Boot is the same, it has holes in the bottom so if water does go into the boot frame, it will come out the bottom. suggest you look at the Renault dialog software to increase you knowledge on the boot.

I say old boy I do believe the water may be leaking through holes in the car that need sealing up
This is true ralphy, so where are these holes ? maybe we could work together in your car, to find the leaks, i will test it by pushing the car over a cliff into the sea and you can tell me where the water leaks in ?

That would make Ralphy's car awfully wet Alex.

In fact, id go so far as to say that it would render his vehicle unusable old chap!

Hi. Had the same problem on mine, it was a perforated weld where the roof and rear wing join. To get to this remove the gutter strip (runs along the roof above the rear window) and the weld is clearly visible at the top of the rear wing. I sorted out which side was leaking by stripping out the boot lining around the rear lights, blocking the gutter after the weld (flooding water around the weld point) once flooded it was easy to see which side is leaking. Once the leak has been traced, just dry the weld and seal with silicone, jobs a good un.

Check the rear seat bar the holes which are in the shell and bar leak strip it out and you'll work it out.
