How do I upgrade my PC?

A guy made my current desk top PC for me about 3 years ago, how do I go about upgrading it myself?

Presumably I need to find out what components are already inside it, is there anything on the web that will do a check and tell you what parts you have, as I have absolutely no idea!!!

Crucial will scan your ram and tell you what you have, and also what you can have in your system.

yeh get crucial memory adviser to see what you have and what you can get. If you have windows XP don't bother with more than 2gig of ram tbh. if it's that old you might be worth looking into a new one!

Ill have a good look when I get home and post my findings, how will I know what sort of motherboard I have etc ?

well did you build it yourself or is it a dell or something? you can get the crucial thing to scan your system without knowing anything anyway

No someone I know off a computer forum built it for me, I really have no idea whats inside it TBH, but Id like to know, I was going to go for a games console but looking into it further I use my PC more and would like that to be more up to date for gaming

i had exactly the same decision to make and decided to use my pc a lot more.

but if you want a gaming pc it's expensive tbh. i think if you run dxdiag (from the run option in xp) it'll give you most of the specs you need. might not give you the exact motherboard model though, you may have to just open it up and ave a look!
