how easy is it to password protect a website ?

IIS or Apache ?

Or you could use a simple PHP script with cookies/sessions

Oh god! They can't even sort out their own security!! :p

As KDF said you could do it with a bit of php or .htaccess file (providing they support it) depending on how you want the security to work.
 
i just want it to ask for a password when they type in the url really doesnt need to be nsa grade just something to stop everyone been able to get on it
