How easy it to fit cams or itbs

i know and tbh it should go through the range with the likes of R27 and so on but then performace would be too close to the more expensive megane :S

but like you said the boosted route is becomin more popular and tbh if my N/A engine let go big time needing a new unit i would have to think hard about the F4Rt as a replacement just because of the potential :)

and yep he plans to use the engine till its last legs give in atm though as its on 130K and just been mapped to 225BHP and 360ft/lbs of torque so its bound to die soon then he will start on a new engine with better qaulity items but tbh the VAG parts within the PD130 engine dont seem to be on the weak side of things though so maybe last a while yet lol

Yeah I like the PD engines, when I remap the totally standard 150bhp units in the golf it ends up with about 300lbft of torque and 195bhp, thats mental for a car that still does 45-50mpg in normal driving!

My engine has lasted 2 years on standard internals with a low boost turbo running 228 bhp. Still on the same gearbox aswell so i think his might last a bit longer than people think it's going to.

Its interesting that boosted motors dont seem to kill the gearboxes quicker than they do in the case of the clio, I wonder if the standard box suffers a lot from RPM rather than torque, as they seem to die fairly easily in the standard car when driven hard, and no more so in the turbo ones.

I have run with a mixture of mk1 and mk2 boxes in my mk1 while it was on ITBs and got through 8 gearboxes in under 10K miles, alhough that is all mileage either on trackdays or just driving to and from, so probably 50% of it was "abusive" miles as it were, its still a very poor survival rate for boxes, so based on that I was expecting the MWMsport car with 258bhp and 250lbft of torque to be spitting them out all over the place, but its done twice the mileage already that I was getting on average from a box in an N/A car with far less power (only in the 170s)

Do you track yours or is it all road miles?

high rpm might be a factor. There are no strengthening kits for the JC5 either which is irritating. I suppose if you fitted a syncro strengthening kit you'd only leave the other components more prone to failure

Either way it's just a s**t box, anyone who says otherwise is mad. Obviously rev matching and so on is going to improve life span but you're still only clutching at straws, if it's driven hard it will suffer, especially with more power :(

This is the reason I have gone honda power for my next mk1 project, it wasnt the F7R or F4R engines I didnt like, would have been happy to use either, but I hated the gearboxes available for them.

The audi box conversions look interesting though, that might put some options back in front of people when looking to turbo their 1*2 :)

ye the VAG box seems a good option on boosted clios

does the magane 225 box not fit??

No track day's but is driven hard just don't rush the gear's, going to track it next year though. One problem with box was a leak had the box looked at and it was fine apart from the leak that was 1 week ago.

fastdanbar, Not directly, the bolt pattern on the block is different so it wont bolt up to the block, and then the shafts are different as well, also it will foul the subframe slightly I believe.

Not a problem if you are using the F4RT as well in terms of fitting the engine to the box though obviously, but still you'll have the shaft issues (unless there are some shafts that work that im just not aware of, people I know who have done it were on custom)

Make sure you keep it topped up then, they really dont like running low on oil.

Had the leak fixed box inspected he said box was still mint i might just be lucky with it but i've took care of the box not to kill it.

Unless he took the box apart, he's a cleverer man than me to be able to inspect it through the casing, lol

wayyyy out of the price range. i would rather put it towards a megane sport

Just read this

I'm out.

If you think you can get cams for £500 and a quick half arsed remap for £200 - you're dreaming
Cams are more than that without fitting
And if you're budget doesn't stretch to an RS2 (which are cheap) you shouldn't even think about ITB's

Sell the car and get something else

Box was taken apart and inspected no half arsed job's with my car

Ah, fair play then mate!

Cool, sounds like you have one of the very few good ones left.

I suspect that decent secondhand boxes are a pretty good investment right now, they're only likely to go up in value as they are getting rarer!

I was suprised when he said it was still mint ,but will need another box next year when i go bigger turbo these wont handle over 300 bhp
