how hard is it to drop a 172 lump into ..

... a new 1.2 16valve clio?

has anybody done this? im guessing gear box/clutch, loom etc....

has to be changed, any idea of a price?

thanks.

chris

cant see it being cost effective youll need brakes suspension(inc rear axle beam) ecu etc as well. i will be alot of hassle and alot of mucking about

lol, ill explain the situation.. basically ive got a fez modded fez now...

my mom has a 1.2 clio, in a couple of years i may be able to get it cheap as i could pay of the final balance (think it was bout 3 grand ish) .. and own the car

id love a hatch with 172 bhp, if i got my moms, and found a company with experience of droping a 172 lump in, it could be a very intresting sleeper:)

changing the suspension/brakes is all part of the fun;)

if you were getting it cheap and could find a rolled 172 with engine gearbox etc all intact for a good price then i guess it wouldnt be too bad but i wouldnt bother if the car you were fitting it in was brand new would be a waste

yep .. u c on ukfiestanetwork.co.uk theres a company called pumaspeed which have experience in putting a 125 bhp puma lump in fezs and also tuning it from there...

i was wondering if there was an equivalent for clios?

a company with experience in this sort of thing... would have thought thered be quite a few ppl wanting 172 lumps in there clios:)

i was looking at salvage clio sports, they are pretty expensive considering its mashed up! found engines and gearboxes for a grand. other options is the good old renault 5 gt turbo engine, or the megane engine. vel satis have a turbo engine based on the megane engine, which has a six speed box.

by the time you will be in the market to do this then you may be able to get a megane rs turbo engine:), that would be my choice.

brakes will definately need upgrading, also suspension, etc. dont know if the body of the 172 sport is re-inforced more than the 1.2.

but anything can be done, but it may cost you near what you could pick up a second hand 172 sport to do it all.

The biggest problem is finding a 172 that gives out......172BHP!! very few do standard.

Whatever!

They all give 172bhp mate. The fact of the matter is that everyone has relied on rolling roads to estimate flywheel figures.

This has been covered time and time again and Im sick of it.

Rolling roads are not penis size measurers, they are tuning aids!

Its a well known fact that they dont give the full 172... as you said its been covered a thousand times

All the RR days ive been on none of them have given the full deal, unless moddd, and then some fell short.

mine was only 163 standard and 180 on the same road after zorst,IK & chip.

As for tuning aids.... they are for judging how well a mod is performing or as you say tune it in....so a good idea of the output it gives. BEFORE and after.

from 163 to 180 with those mods? Sounds a bit optimistic.

17bhp doesnt seem off, seems pretty right to me. Chip should release 10-11bhp, Zorst 3-4bhp and the rest on the other, could also have been a colder day second time round which may add an extra 1-2bhp.

Just to be picky, the 172 badge doesnt even mean 172bhp. The 172 SHOULD have 169-170bhp as the 172 indicates the PS measuremaent and not the BHP.

The PS figure is getting used on all cars nowadays, with numbers in there names,

IE........... MG ZS180........MGZR160......PUG180.......EVO FQ300.......CelicaVVTI 190.....FOCUS ST170..........CLIO172..........SO ON.........

However as the lads have said, the clio doesnt do too well when it gets measured as accurately as it possibly can be. Some are falling short as much as 161bhp and the higher ones are recording 166-167bhp.

I had to have the ECU remapped for the PiperX Viper...infact it only gave 158with the mods before being chipped.

I have used the same rolling road to judge all the mods so to be as accurate as possible. I had a standard run @163 then the Viper & K-tec zorst @158 and then when it was remapped @180. These were all done at Power Engineering so by reputation I believe the results I achieved.

The Viper really screwed the fueling as I was only getting 20mpg, hence the need for a remap .
