How hard is it to fit 17cm in a Mk1

As above Djw Dave is wanting to fit new components to his mk1 and seen some 17cms that have taken his fancy. How much work is needed to get them to fit where the 13cms sit just now in the door?

Cheers
John

Well youve got holes for 13cm speakers, the only way is to take the door card off measure a 17cm circle and cut around it. No other way really. And ud have to make sure they were secured to the door, cant just screw them onto the door card, they will flap all over the place.

Make sure you replace the small dashboard speakers cos they r cack. unless uv allready done this.

wouldnt bother tbh, 13cm is fine. build a more powerful setup in the back with whatever size speakers u want.

^ going to have to diagree there, the rears are the least important in you system. you can get many 13cm that are totally sufficent in the mid bass region, some of the Image dynamic mids are superb!!

as for the 17cm, would could try building an mdf spacer ring, so unless these mids are not cylinder like, may be able to get them in, other wise cutting the metal, sounds daunting, but its not too bad, you still may need a spacer ring, as the new mid may be too deep stopping the window going down.

Would be happy with 13cms. But they need to be quite good on my tight(ish) budget what would you recomend mate?

Cheers Dave

For my doors i am putting in 13cm Alpine SPS130A they are 57.99 but i love em and they are alpine. take a look on mcs-direct if u want.

Been looking around there and have seen a couple of nice sets that i might go for. I really wanted to put the 17cm Accelerate Pioneer comps in but ill just go for the 13cm ones instead.

17cm in the front are straight forward for any competant installer.. 2 hours max... well worth the work the get the extra mid range..

Weve fitted alpine type R comps into a mk1 172...

iv got 17cm components in my mark 1 and i needed to make a spacer away from the door card as the magnet was too big. other than that the fit was fine but i needed to drill new mounting holes

So it can be done, i would rather have 17cm in with a bit hassle than just plain 13cms. arj256 what comps did you go for?
