Renault 5 sleeper - F4R on ITB’s



Lovely little car. I’ve been following a lad on YouTube with an R5 Campus with the 182 conversion. Insane little cars.

Straight of the back of Mallory, booked onto Donny for an evening sesh with afew mates. Been to donington loads but surprisingly never driven it even though its the track closest to me. Met up with @Dannyafro and had a steady drive down early afternoon.

Didn’t really prep the 5 as it was already track ready. Just check the vitals and away I went.

Drove like a champ, wasn’t as quick as the other lads on full slicks but still overtaking plenty of other cars on track. AR1’s were great as usual.

Definitely need Togo back to Donny as I know I can be a hell of a lot quicker round there. Was finding the limits of the ds2500 brake pads but I think that was down to the steelies not letting enough air through to the brake disc. Coming into the pits after 5laps you could barely touch the front wheels.

You can see my lines weren’t great but I’ll definitely know for next time what part of the track to use. Did plenty of laps though and took loads of folk out on track. Literally ran it till the tank was empty enough till I started getting fuel surge and then had enough just to get me home. Really enjoyed it and I think now is the right time to pull it off the road and get some work done on it as it’s been used and abused for +2 years. Planning on getting it back on the road for May ready for Retrorides weekender as I wasn’t to take it round Goodwood.

Bacon, I ran ds1.11’s up front and ds2500’s in the rear on my mk2 cup and mk3 200. It was 100% the most powerful braking setup I have ever experienced on a car.

But I have also ran ds2500’s all round on the mk2 cup, and that was impressive too tbf. Never had any fade issues on track - no brake ducts either.

Ds1.11’s will probably make the 5 do stoppies 😂

At Retrorides I was talking to brigsy about ds1.11’s. I’m really surprised how good his brakes were as we were on track on the same session at Mallory and his brakes are a lot smaller than mine but seem to have similar stopping power. Got no gripes about the ds2500’s though, ran them years and this is the first time I’ve actually ran out of brakes in the 5.

Ds1.11 will absolutely sort your brake issues mate even with limited cooling with the steelies.

Paint started bubbling on my steelies at Anglesey and no brake fade.

Sounds like the ticket then mate 👍🏼 I wanna cut some weight off the 5 anyway so might treat it to some lighter wheels. Got todo something if I wanna keep up with you round track 😂

Keep the steels mate they look class. New engine will have a bit more power that will offset the need to put it on a diet :cool:

After a long winter, finally started working on the 5. With me doing more trackdays every year it would be a great idea to fit a cage. Don’t really use the car that often on the road and it’s more or less a track car anyway. Found a Saftey Devices cage on eBay for sale and sent a mate to fetch it

Made a start to strip it out. Didn’t want to go all the way as the cars already light anyway just wanted the clubsport look

Bought a OMP seat and side mounts. Trial fitted the seat but it was too close to the steering wheel plus the rear bracket hit the seat belt guide. Bought the OMP Champ R seat as they’re quite narrow seat and I knew they’d fit in the 5 with a cage

Milled new slots on the side guides so a lanky fucker like me can fit inside

Also chopped down the side mounts so they didn’t hit the harness belt guide on the seat

Trial fitted the mounts again just to make sure I didn’t f**k up the slots 😂

Ordered some base plates from Saftey Devices, came with six weld in brackets and stainless nut and bolts for the whole fittings

Cleaned all the paint and seam sealer ready for welding in, got a local lad to weld them in

Slapped some under coat ready for painting at a later date and finished fitting the cage

Ran out of daylight and fitted the seat and harnesses in the garage

Next morning fitted the last bar of the cage which was the front one next to the windscreen, didn’t know what todo with the interior light as it was in the way… looks like a dogs dick but chopped it in half

Shame but I’ve already committed 😂 after that I took it to the local garage to give it a good wash as it’d not moved in 5months and was covered in dust from just sitting in the garage

Love the clubsport look, will tidy it up at a later date but got my first track day in May at donington
