how long for the engine to losen up

  Lionel Richie

depends on the engine and how its driven

on a 172, the going rate is 20K untilthey come alive

thrash the crap out of it, best way to loosen it up

My 172 got quicker and quicker as it went on the 182 seems to be doing the same 2.5k now and its much better then at 1k :D

Get it warm then give it death... worked fine for me. You have a warranty if it doesnt.

My Cup was going like a rocket from about 3.5k miles and ran the 1/4 in 14.5secs at that mileage, it got a little better after that but was basically run in from about 6k.

20k is too long unless you never thrash it.

So how do we break them in? Thrash from day 1 or is there some preferrred technique to follow?
I ran mine in gently as per the Renault recommendations (read the handbook) then gradually built it up and did its first 1/4 mile run at ~1250 miles

Always let them warm up fully first, but you can drive them hard and they lap it up.

650 miles of varied driving from new. Some hard workouts and some motorway stuff.

After that, once its warm give it hell!

hell from day 1. it has a warrenty and unless your going to keep it for more than 3 years who cares. as the boys said DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT, lol

yeah but you had a special "northern" cup, so it was always gonna be faster from day 1

seriously though, the quickest clio ive driven has 75000miles on it (52 plate!!!), all the others ive driven still feel tight

high load, low rpm, best method for runing in

do that for 300miles, then weld the right pedal to the floor

Some cars do take a loooong time to run in though, my mates mk1 172 was pretty lame until it had about 50k miles on the clock then all of a sudden it was a rocket ship!?

He sold it a few months ago with over 100k on the clock and it was a flying machine...
