This is a huge grey area, I got pulled twice and fined for my old Yozza race system, offically though I dont think they can do anything unless your v5 has the standard db levels on it. Did you get fined?

Tells you on the V5 these days.

Mine doesnt, im not sure what year this came in though. The police around here had their db testers out and said up to around 90db was acceptable, even though it was testing 70 before the car was even started.. Yozza race was over 100db

There is no grey area. Legally it cannot be louder than standard, however only in the last few years have manufacturers had to decalre on the V5 the standard volume of the exhaust, so an older car, its almost impossible to prove.

Where is this stated? Its only recently that the police have become so anal about it, probably due to chavs sitting in car parks at midnight boucing their 1.2's off the limiter :p

they said it had to be 82 db and it should be in my log book
just checked my "uk registration certificate"
and it says

sound level
stationary (db) -
engine speed (db) -
drive by (db) -

and they are all blank, i have been told by the officer that i had 2 weeks to get it quietened and retested
what do i do?

retested? what has he given you? I just got a £30 on the spot fine x 2 lol, he said he would just keep giving me them until I changed it, which I did.

Seems like the police dont really know what they are suppose to do...

Here:

Regulation 54(2) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulation 1986 as amended said:
Every exhaust system and silencer shall be maintained in good and efficient working order and shall not be altered to increase the noise made by the escape of exhaust gases.

yeh he said ive got 2 weeks for it to be under the supposedly 82db for a 1.2 and that i have got to get it retested by them and it will be lifted
no fine
if i fail to get it retested could take me court n all that. gave me a huge form that he filled out too

What you need to do is find out where he got the 82db figure from, is that stationary or drive by, and at what engine speed?

Basically if your V5 doesnt state any of the above, then they have to compare it to a standard vehicle in good coniditon for the age, in other words, they wont be able to do it because they wont have time or resources to do that.

wtf, taking you to court over a loud exhaust and a £30 fine? I doubt this, sounds like hes just trying to worry you tbh.

  LY R27
so call them up and say it doesnt say on my v5 - its just blank, what should i do?
and tbh the man said "wheres ur redline" "i dont have one" " oh ok put it at 4k"
and i duno he just said it was suposed to be 82 or something

says it on the bottom of the slip he gave me "if it is not retested within 2 weeks, court action will be taken and up to 1k fine will be given"

Thing I don't get is how did he even notice? You must have really been giving it some past him for him to pull ya.

I drove my 1.2 for 5 months with no backbox at all, (due to being a student and not being able to afford one) and never even got a sniff of trouble.

Wonder if anyone has the 200 one to hand for a comparison (mine is at home)?

WTF has your "redline" got to do with it? I presume he meant rev limiter. Also how does he then get to 4k?!?!

surely all you have to do is take it to an mot station and get them to sign and stamp you ticket, used to get a few in when i did mot's, had a few myself lol

thing is the the noise is not measured on the mot, its just down to if the tester thinks its too loud
