How Low on 17 rims

mine and freds are lowered with -60mm Pi springs and 17s, no rubbing at all even with 5 on board, for the non 172 models -60mm is about right with 17s, the tyres sit flush with the arches, if youre on a budget than springs would be fine on its own, had my springs on for 8 months and the shocks are still in good order, the grip/ roll resistance still improved by a fair margin. atm comfort is acceptable so i dont know will harder shocks will be suitable for our roads....
Well id expect theyre not suitable for UK roads, but -60mm wont help in the first place. If youve got 17s on a small engined motor you might as well go for the shocks too as even though your shocks will be ok for now, theyll wear. It will improve handling after all.
If you think about it a modded car is only going to be bought off you by another enthusiast, no one else will touch it, so you might as well go the whole hog or not bother at all.
On my mk2 172 ive lowered it 40mm all round on apex suspenson on 17s 40mm off set but i needed 2 get the arches rolled but its fine now no rubbing. If ur getting 17s and lowering it 60mm ur better off getting a 40mm off set if u were just lowering it 40mm then a 35mm OS would be ok, its just the 172s have a wider track than the normal clios so thats y i got the 40mm OS, 35mm is for normal clios but if ur lowering it 60mm then ur better off goin for a 40mm OS.
personally, if i was u i wouldnt get 17s stick simple, no bigger than 16s! 17s look a bit ott i think, unless on a 172. but with a 172 u got the power already to be able to afford to stick 17s on. oh and if u got the 2000 1.4, whack a piper x air filter on, if u aint already, trust me it will b loud, my mate had one, OMG

Speaking from experience i would go for 17s and no more than a 35mm drop, the 17s look so much better than 15s or 16s and give more grip, and with a 35mm drop the car will be quite good to look at, i originally had mine on 35mm Eibach Springs on 17s, then i went for 60mm on the same 17s (after my mate had he 106 GTI lowered 40mm), but i wish i hadnt, the ride was absoloutely horrific, the car looked fantastic, but was very impractical, also, when it was lowered 35mm there was no scrubbing at all no matter what i did, but when it was 60mm on full lock on uneven ground it scrubbed (nothing major though).
Ben - I mean just using springs. As you know ive commented in a million threads about how wrong it to just have springs if your going more than -40mm.
My new clios ride isnt that good, my dads M3 has 19inchers with 35 profile tyres. The front suspension isnt that impressive, but its still better than my car which is unmodified! I think ill wait for doing the serious stuff when i actually get a performance car and the backache will be worth it!
I wouldnt put 40 off set wheels on a clio, its pure wrong!
Youll need to replace your wheel barings on a standard clio with 17s no matter wot drop ya got. if you lower it 60 and dont uprate your shocks youll fail MOT before you even drive it in, although theres nothing wrong with it at the time these guys know the implications off these types off lunacy.
Uprated shocks dont neccessarily have to be stiffer than normal 1s just mean they can handle the drop bettert han standard 1s.
If i was ne1 id buy a whole kit. Apex kit is onlt £233 and the K-tec and G-max kits srent that far off either.

IMHO if ur goin to drop it 60mm just springs are alrite unless the springs lift out of the shock cups and they dont bottom out straight away with cut down bumpstops
if ur cars done a few miles its prob better if you just get a set of replacement original shocks there life will be shortened but they will prob live how long u own the car
most sports shocks non-adjustable are too hard for the road specially on 17s with a 60mm drop most people wont put up with it and the handling will suffer unless ur on flat roads, most sports shocks are shortened anyway id go for a set of adjustables though

Paul, i was reffering to this guys question, hes driving a 1.4 which is an offset of et35. so and offset off 40 would end up damaging his car.
I dont know about England but i know a lot off people who have dropped their clio on Pis -60 springs and the MOT guys have said "that drop is not safe on standard shocks". just stating my experiences, ya can listen or ignor me. At the end off the day im giving my advice just as every1 else.
The ride on the coilovers is actually very soft, its all relative I suppose, I am swopping the springs to HandR ones to see if that would improve. Dont think it handles any better than on my Prima Springs but can be caned down B roads at silly low ride height, think there are pictures somewhere in the gallery, how do you show pics on the forum?
