how much am i looking at

i need the bearing thing replaced at the bottom of my steering column

and id like all my wheel bearings changed

Whatever anyone says someone else will say its to much, but...

I payed around £60 for each wheel bearing change on my rt, had all 4 changed in around a year.

Dont know about the other bearing.

Yeah, like Wongy says, if the person who fits it doesnt have the correct press, the bearing wont last 1000 miles. I know!

common problem with Reno, at least I had it with my 1.8 16V and willy as also a lot of my friends.

Sollution : follow the steering rack all the way down, there is a big rubberhose pop it. Its hard but it can be done. Now you will see a joint, here is the play of the steeringwheel. there is a connection between your steeringwheel and your steeringmechanisme. just fill the gap and you will be fine (I used stainless plate of 1/8") reinstall the rubberthing and fixed !!

how do you know if your steering colume / steering rack needs replacing - what the symptoms for both these parts?

i have alittle play in my steering, not sure if its the rack or the colume?

is that safe?

erm in a UJ I wouldnt think so! If you shim the sides then it will help but filling the gap will not do feck all.

Ben why do you want to replace the bearings? Are you very rich or something?

Also the column, theres only 2 bearings and theres 2 UJs. Teh 2 bearings are at the top, one behind the sterign wheel and the other about 8 inches back. Then a UJ then down under the riubber boot another UJ joining the rack.

Why do you need it replaced? Are you sure the rack mounts havent just go tsoggy from oil and allowign the rack to move about?

The higher mileage 16vs tend to suffer from excess play in the steering wheel due to the UJ thing being worn out. On the Renault 5, its as simple as replacing the Rubber UJ thing, however on the 16v you to buy half the steering colume, they dont do the rubber UJ thing separately.

It made one hell of a difference once it was changed.

chris u big gay who never uses cliosport! - lol

renault reckon its that joint that has play in it. and my front right wheel bearing is really noisy at speed, so i was gonna get the lot done at once.
