How much for a new steering rack?

Hi all,

I am going to look at a 172 cup tonight which has a reported knocking problem when stationary and turning the wheel left to right. Now its been on a ramp and the track rod ends and steering arms look ok! I think it might be the rack!

Now most people would walk away but the buyer said he would negotiate on the price and factor this into the deal. The rest of the car is great so i want to go for it. Really im looking at worst case scenario of replacing the whole rack.

could anyone give me a rough figure for a new rack for a 2003 172 cup?

try the track rods themselves, racks aren't as dear as you might expect but try the track rods and an alignment,, allow £200 or so for that.

Subframe off to change the rack - about 4 hours labour.

Rack from Renault approx £500, aftermarket probably £200-£250 ish

So after all that Mines out the window then?

How would the pump affect it? Only curious as there is a horrible clicking sound coming from mine whilst stationary or when manouevering slowly. I have changed the track rods as I was advised it could be them, but its still making the noise. Also I tried to tighten the rack clamps but couldn't get anymore on them. At a bit of a loss now, took it to NWP who kindly put it on their ramps but typically the noise went away once on the ramps!
