How Much for the following

Right then,

Just come into a bit of spare cash and im finally going to get my car sorted, i need a new rear shock absorber and a new ball joint.
is it better to replace both of these as a pair rather than just replacing the faulty one?

and i take it these will be dealer parts only? the car hasnt been well for a while now, getting worse the back end skips under heavy breaking and i got told that its because of the rear shock has no gas left in it - is this true? would that happen or have i been lead up the garden path?

Cheers

Ian
