Generally its considered that you can spend a fortune on the engine and not see any considerable gains.

IMO money is best spent on handling, braking system then breathing mods, exhaust and a remap.

Some basics:

Panel filter +decat might be good for 3bhp....give or take a few

Remap costs anywhere from £140.00 (www.fastchip.nl) to £300+ (www.ktecracing.com/ www.rstuning.com) Looking at not only better power delivery but probably more power. Figures no more than 10bhp should really be expected from past expiereinces.

Inlets matched - from angelworks costs circa £200 odd and your looking at an apparent 5-8bhp

Cams - costly and not sure how much your looking at :| Not something id delve into myself.....Throttle bodys......turbo......etc there are loads of jobs you can do on the 172...but your not looking at getting much more than 250bhp. That figure of 250bhp...you could buy a new car with the amount spent getting there.

Waste of money

Decent tyres & pads and a few driving days at a track better option

Im usually with you on this comment. ie waste of money. But i gotta say since getting my car remapped, its definatley something that i regard as not money wasted. The default maps on 172 is poor to say the least.

Improved throttle response and better power band being the two main improvements. But a higher idle thats less lumpy and removing the ignition retarding that cause the car to run like a kangaroo with ADHD has been fixed and works a charm.

Better MPG to when running 98 ron fuel...im currently getting 4mpg extra than before.

Certainly worth the 140 i payed.

Next will be inlets i think to see if it lives up to its hype.

Removing weight is all well and good, but i use my car and the rear seats daily, so maybe removing the spare wheel is far as i can go without buying a cup ;)
