How much money do you make from breaking 182?!

  Clio 182
Hi guys,

Unfortunately I have written off my 2004 Artic Blue Clio 182 :dapprove: Valued at £3700 by insurers, but repair bill of £8500, Cat C. Done by an independant place, it might just about be repairable, but I'd rather break it now.

Lost the back end and hit a fence sideways, so whole near side of car is smashed in. However, the car still drives well, engine and running gear is fine and wheels all still straight and aligned.

Buy back price off the insurance company is high, just over £1000 which is about double what I was hoping!

Anyway, what I'm wondering is how much do people tend to make breaking for parts? Is it significantly more than £1000?

It's done 73k miles and I just finished rebuilding the engine with new valves, new head gasket, new timing belt, new auxiliary belt and new clutch, with all receipts, literally 3 weeks before crashing it! It's also got a pipercross viper induction kit and painted inlet manifold, so really a very good engine waiting to go in someone's car!

The driver's side wing, door and boot are ok. Subframe, suspension (with sportlines), hubs, driveshafts are ok. Radiator and stuff at front all ok too. It's got dark grey 172 wheels with two very good michelins on front and some fairly old contis on back.

My gut feeling is there's about £2k of bits there. Does that sound realistic?

Justing trying to decide if it's worth buying back.

Cheers

thats a cheap buy it back price tbh, also barter with them as it costs them so much to arrange a low loader to come collect it. well for a start you have £500 for the engine and £250-300 for the gearbox if its top notch so you do the rest of the maths.

  330i. E30 Touring.
I'd say the engine on that mileage- £400. Gearbox -£250 if no whines/crunches. Interior- £200.

even with taking into account 'It's done 73k miles and I just finished rebuilding the engine with new valves, new head gasket, new timing belt, new auxiliary belt and new clutch, with all receipts'????

Around or less than 50k, I'd say £500. Up to 80k- £400. 100k and above- £350.

That's how i'd price it.. Obviously including all ancilaries..

They valued your car at 3700?

Were you bent over? I'd be looking at a settlement of at least 1k more.

I feel like making a sticky!

Thanks for replys, so chances are it's just about worth it. I was happy with the valuation to be honest, only £300 less than what I paid for it over a year ago. Was also higher than most similar ones on auto trader.

Just need to decide if I can be arsed to break it now!

This is where you went wrong.

I'll speak to admin after my holiday and see if I can sort a sticky out for written off cars and claiming in general as that's a very poor settlement. And it seems to be becoming more and more common.

It will come down to weather you think it's worth the hassle, I just couldn't be arsed, all the selling, stripping, posting, buyers ect... i'll take the money and buy again. :)

Silly question here, but why do you have to pay £1,000 to 'buy back' your car? Surely it's yours to do with what you wish?

His insurance will give him 3700 for it, then it is theirs. He can buy it back from them for 1k.

Obviously in reality they'll just give him 2700 quid.

If the front end is intact - front bumper is worth 2-300. Bonnet, Xenons a good bit, splitter? Rear bumper 1-200. It just takes time to off load it all and then you may have to pay to have the car removed from your drive. In the past I cut one up with an angle grinder and took it to the tip. But that was only a mini.

Previous gearbox prices sound ambitious to me.

So how exactly do you get more off them? I bought the car off auto trader for a start. How do I justify a higher value, when it is based on 'market value', i.e. what it costs to replace the car with one of a similar age and mileage. Modifications will not make any difference. I could take the money they give me and buy another one almost exactly the same, so I really don't get why that's a poor settlement?
