how much would coilovers help a meg 225

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner

just seen a trophy for sale on autotrader for 20k !! and it seem they have just tinkered with the suspension mainly and changed the wheels (v.nice motor though)

would this sort the handling issues with the standard 225 ?

Well youre being a bit vague there Maurice. First of all, what do the Meganes problems consist of and what coilovers do you have in mind?

Any reports ive read + posts on here and referred to the handling not being that great and thats what mainly lets the car down. I have also read that coilovers do amazing things for the 172/182.

I do need a bigger car as i have a little addition to the family! ... but i am going to hang fire for a while yet. just looking at some options.

Well they make the cars better for two reasons, the damper quality is leagues ahead of OEM so the ride is barely impaired, and the springs have a much higher poundage so grip improves. The problem for a family car will be on the motorway. Youll have less travel and it wouldnt be ideal for getting a baby to sleep!

A good way of reducing understeer is getting an anti roll bar kit. Get a front and back ARB because the Megane isnt exactly light at the front. A thicker rear ARB will dial out some understeer. The good thing is, you wont notice a ride difference.

You might want to get an Eibach spring kit which will lower the car slightly. Obviously lowering the CoG is a good thing, and the harder you go round a corner the stiffer the progressive spring will be become. As many Cliosporters found though, being progressive the spring starts soft and some people even think the ride is better with them!

Rob, I was reading this months Evo mag, and they reckoned that putting a thicker ARB would tighten up roll (obviously) but lower the threshold of when the car understeers, if fitted to the front. Fitting a fat ARB on the back would have the opposite effect and enhance the oversteer.

Just repeating what I read <--- thats got me in trouble before!

Well Ill let you know tomorrow cos Im test driving one. Obviously the 225 is never going to equal a 172 in terms of handling being a bigger car. But dont forget it a renautsport and will have been designed with the same purpose in mind as the 172/182/V6 and should be much more focused than the standard model. Trouble with having a car as good as the 172 is that it makes your next choice soooo difficult because the 172 is a such a capable car!
