How to fit a gear knob?

Hey this is gonna sound dumb, however what is the best way to fit a new gear knob. I have tried brute force but it does not reach the end of its travel and this is wobbly and I have tried twisting it on to no avail. Any help?

You'll have to cut the knob off.

Yeah the old ones off, just the new one dosent like to stay in position. Best to glue?
