..as mentioned surley removing huge 17" wheels (well they are for a supermini) will improve handling dont forget that big saloon cars run on 17" wheels most still on 16" wheels.
in times of old polos, clios etc.. would run 13" or 14" wheels so for a car of its size 17" is frankly daft.
If you can adjust the damping on your coilovers make the fronts softer or the rears harder. Softer damping means the weight transfer onto the wheel is slower compared to the wheel with harder damping.
I have been reading a book about this so when I get home I will type out a better explanation.
My handling on 17's is ok, its no where near as good as they were on 16's though, you need some good tyres and you need to experiment with the presures
did you have the camber setup when you fitted the coilovers if not might be worth having them laser alligned otherwise not much point having them,if you did have them setup and you have changed the wheels that can knock it out
Spend some time with someone who REALLY knows how to setup a chassis, more often than not the fact that you have coilovers doesnt mean it'll handle at all.
