how to properly test if oil and water are mixing?



right today i had an idiot come and look at my civic i have for sale, he opened the oil cap and looked inside it and there was the tinyest bit of watery oil, it was a bit browny white, inside the engine though of coruse is fine, however being a 'professional mechanic' he said it was 100% gone, his now posted up on a forum saying the car is fucked, ive offered anyone to come and prove its gone they can have the car for free.

however i cant remember the specific test to check if they are mixing, is it a leak test? or something to do with dye?
 
i told him to compression test it his answer was 'you cant tell by doing that, and its deffinatly fucked, im a professional mechanic'
 
LOL hes chatting out of his arse then.

Sniff tests i think works by seeing if any oil is getting into the water and thus goes purple or something.

Pressure test, tests for that leak but via a leak in air, so same thing surely?

i thought sniff test was for if exhaust gasses are in the water system

sniff is to test for hydrocarbons getting into coolant, Leakdown test will tell you if there's a breach from the cylinder into coolant or oil. Coolant into oil is very hard, it's not at all unusual for condensation to get into the breather system on many different engines. best proof would be to take the rocker cover of and see if there's any significant deposits of "mayo" and if the oil itself is looking milky.

If it's mixing, as Danny said there'd be a fair amount of it under the rocker cover. Certainly from experience the 'mayo on the cap' test doesn't prove foolproof for Zetec SE engines, as 90% of the bloody things do it. All it proves is that you should investigate it, as none means there very likely isn't an issue - small amounts just mean it might be worth looking into.

Post up that he's a professional arsewipe and should he care to substantiate his claim then you'll not pursue legal proceedings for loss of monies through him spreading inaccurate truths. Remember though, if he says he 'thinks' it's gone, you can't get anywhere but if he's telling people it definitely is gone then he's legally out of line without proof.

Hate wannabes. IT is full of them and it's f'ucking tedious at times.
 
It really pissed me off, 4 goons come to look at the car made out it was an absolute heap and then because i wouldnt drop on the price they said the cars fucked and theve posted it all up, they were all trying to intimidate me into dropping the price or accepting its fucked.

an engine thats been used on short runs or just started from stone cold will have abit of gunk in it...my mams 08 clio has it...its moisture from the cold engine mixing with ya oil every car will do it imo! those c***s want a good back hander mate and u should give them one lol!
