Hub nut come loose?

  120d M-Sport
Hi guys!

Basically a few days ago a rumbling noise appeared from the front, thought it was engine related until it got a little louder but now im convinced its one of the hubs.

Now for my question. Should you see the same amount of thread on each driveshaft where the hub nut screws on as i can see about 5 lines of thread on the passenger driveshaft and 1 line of thread on the driver side driveshaft.

Sorry for the noobish question, the hub nuts both feel tight on both sides but not had chance to use my bros tools on it yet. Hes my relief in the morning so hes bringing all the tools to take a look, im just wondering what it can be?

I even get slight wheel wobble on changing gears so i can only assume the nut needs tightening? Its only started these past 2days and i work 12hour shifts so you cam imagine what time i have left after a shift.

Thanks alot guys any help appriciated at all!! :D

Im going with wheel bearing?

I also had this in my mind matey, dont know if this would cause a bit of wheel wobble when changing gears tho :S

When i seen the amount of thread left on either side it had me stumped tho!

If it is just the bearing then how long will it survive for?

I have 2 172 hubs at home for either side so if it will last another week or so i will buy 2 new ball joints in the mean time then do both sides!

Won't the local Corrie garage sort it?

Id blame that bloody John Stape!

I think a wheel bearing makes a sort of vibrating noise, not heard of hub nuts coming loose?

(Apologies for the Corrie joke)

Ha, wouldnt trust websters with changing a wheel let alone Hub! :rasp:

Im sure its the cobbles that have ruined my balljoints as it is!

It could be the bearing i guess, just hoping the b*****d doesnt fail on me as that wont be good :/ would be happier if the hub had come loose although ive never heard of that happening!

Just finding it strange how the drivers shaft has literally no thread left and the passenger has loads :S

No probs on the joke btw  thanks for the advice so far mate :)

All sorted now guys, it appeared to be the hub nut was loose about 3 to 4 threads on the passenger driveshaft

Drives perfect if not better than before now!

Cheers Bodge for the reply mate :)
