Hybrid Adventure

  S2000
Well I finally got myself a clio hybrid today after a long time wanting one. I got the train at 8.00 from Edinburgh to Doncaster. By 11.00 I met mays off williamsclio to see his 170bhp hybrid. Then by about 11.01 mays had been pulled over by the police . Just before being pulled over he had put it in 2nd gear and said something along the lines of "I'll show you what the car can do", though he hadn't realised there was a police car directly behind .

After that slight hiccup he hit some country lanes and f**k me that thing is fast, about an hour later I was on my way in the hybrid. Then after doing about 200 miles and only 40 miles left to home I hit a problem. I pressed down the accelerator but it just hit the floor and nothing happened. I then had to go for about half a mile on the edge of the dual carrageway in first at 1000rpm which seemed like an awfully long time . Anyway once I got to a lay by I had a look and it turned out the throttle cable had come out of the plastic clip that joins it to the pedal. It was pretty clear someone else had had this problem before as it was only being held on with tape. I tried to re-use the tape on there to sort it temporarily but it wasn't happening as the tape wouldn't stick. I was a bit annoyed by this point when I remembered the wiring for a sound system that mays included with the car so I opened the bag and luckily a lot of it had been wound round with insulation tape. After a lot of fiddling, using some of the insulation tape off the wiring and the help of a pair of laces from my shoe I managed to bodge the cable on.

Then I was back on my way but could only give it about 1/4 throttle at most to avoid it doing the same again. I have to say it made busy roundabout interesting only being able to take it to 1500rpm in first.

All in all a bit eventfull but glad to have it home now. The only other thing I noticed is a bit of a squeek/squeel from one of the belts when its warmed up and someone hadn't put the boot around the steering column back on properly so there was a fair bit of noise coming through and my feet got a bit hot . I'll try and get a video up the squeeking/squeeling tomorrow to see what you think it is though I'm hoping its the alternator belt.

Also, does anyone know if you can buy the little plastic bit on the end of the throttle cable by itself or will I need to get a new cable?

Only a minor problem tbh. It was abit annoying but its a 15 year old car so some things are to be expected to go wrong, and i know how much work has been done to the car so hopefully I shouldn't have any major problems. I went to the scrappies today and got a plastic bit off another clio and managed to fit it to mine without a problem so she's back on the road.

The end of the cable is a little frayed though so I'll have to get a new cable at some point but I'm just happy to have it running properly again for now.

Recently replaced clutch, t/belt, water pump alternator and a few other bits and pieces

oh and josh yeah it does say williams hybrid on the back.

get some pics up of it in the media section.

I'd be livid too if i'd just bought a car & the accelerator cable snapped.
I'd also be wary as to how i'd had been driven too ...
"Just before being pulled over he had put it in 2nd gear and said something along the lines of "I'll show you what the car can do"

Hmmm:eek: sounds like he was a bit lead footed to me !

He was just showing me what the performance was like tbh. I would expect him to do that otherwise how am I going to know what the performance is like? After that he drove it at pretty low revs etc tbh.

I'd never expect any one to do it on a test drive tbh, i'd never do it either. Still each to their own.

How would you know how fast it was any way ?? Did you drive others beforehand ?

It's just a difference in opinion really, imo if you are buying a car like that which is based on performance very much you want to see what the car is capable of. As long as the engine is fully warmed up its not going to do it any harm.

If you buy a car with performance in mind, you'd be a fool to not test it.

If you were buying a 1.2 or the like, sure. You just want to check around for major things really. But anything with a sport heritage gets a few proper standing/rolling acceleration tests along with a top speed attempt if the owner/salesman is game.

Otherwise you could buy the car and then be like.. WTF, there's something wrong here! Not such an issue from a garage, but privately you'd be fooked.

Cheers, yeah I quite like it, lol. It's had a lot done and the guy selling seemed genuinely gutted at having to sell it but he needed the cash.

OK, just read over the whole thread.

Im 95% certain i was behind you today. It was white, said Williams Hybrid at the right hand side of the boot and a single pipe exhaust.

Its got to be you lol !!

  S2000
lol, yeah I noticed a 182 behind me!!! DO you have a private plate or something iirc? I was on my way out to samg1988's house at that point. If you see me again give me a flash.

Yeah mate, that was me. Was off to tesco. I then went down glasgow road after having to get pass a dodgy golf driver coming up on my right. (where the red zone is) Think you got stuck at the lights near the casino.
