I wouldn't mate, because i'm sure the previous owners didn't mind ragging it.

All the more reason not to rag it.

I hardly ever drive mine hard, mainly because I know how much Saab parts are if it decides to die. Mainly though because it gives me a bad back and my hearing aid doesn't like the noise of the engine. I usually have to go for a lie down afterward.

Isn't it like driving a sofa anyway so tachincally you're resting your old bones whilst driving?

You can lend the car to me once a month I'l give her a good go to keep her alive if your worried about pushing her.

Really wouldn't mind a 3-door 93.
Aero or Viggen, I wouldn't mind, so long as I still a grand or 2 aside from a trip to Abbott!
Brace down that front end enough and these french fancies wouldn't have a chance
:)

@ gally

It is like a big sofa, but my bones are so brittle, I went to get my pension from the post office, parked the car up, stepped of the kerb and broke my hip.

True story.

@Goodj

It does handle like a bit of a pram compared to the 172, but it is nice to have a car with some good straight line speed. Although it is immature, I do love pissing all over the chavs in their BM's and keeping up with Scooby's when they go for the overtake.

But the handling, to get it anywhere near the 172 standard, you would have to spend 2K. New shocks and springs, lightweight wheels (standard weigh a f**king tonne) steering rack clamp, strut braces etc.

:eek: I drove my old car quicker than I drive my new one.

I feel bad ragging the tits out it. :(

Sometimes on a dry day i'll give it some stick but not all the time.

You do realise it's a £5k Ford, not a supercar....

Abbott's Viggen Rescue pack, I hear, does a good job of making that wheel in front of the driver make some difference to what the 2 front wheels do.

Nobody suspects SAAB's, even if one goes past at a steady 1xxmph everyone just thinks "Must be a medical emergency, or there's an important meeting over which fabric to use on the new range of IKEI sofas"

Also, unlike BMW's, SAAB vehicles all come with indicators as standard, and, unlike Imprezzas, dont grow ever larger wings and tailpipes as they age

better fron ARB makes a huge difference I'm told. Needs to though, last viggen i drove was a torque steery, under-steery handful. Great cars never-the-less though. I've been looking at 9000 carlsons recently, so much car for the money.

@Gally:

I friend of mine had an FRP and only chopped it in when the service came around that needed the brakes rebuilt. I was looking into one a year or so ago, right up to the part where I saw the running costs on a 10-year-old Ford. What a Ford though. Lovely machine... not for those with brittle bones though!

Yeah it is so inconspicuous. And like Danny said, so much car for your money.

Mine is about 260bhp, supposedly, I suspect it is more like 245bhp when all is said and done. It torques steers like a b**ch, but the understeer isn't too much of a problem, if you know what the limits are and when it will let go, you can get round corners pretty fast.

The only thing I hate about it is the total detached feeling the steering wheel has. I drove my dads Astra diesel the other say, felt like a go-kart in comparison.

Craig would probably die. 40 profile tyres, 17" wheels, pretty solid supsension!

It's not renowned for it's comfort I must say but I drove it up from Reading about 7hrs and felt fine. Depends how hard you're driving it to be honest, most cars can be subtle if you drive them right.

The brakes rebuild sometimes put people off which is shame and the fact Ford no longer make parts for the car doesn't help.

I wouldn't worry too much about breaking it though. Only the gearbox that's really vulnerable (and they're CHEESE!!!!)
The vee?

@CRaigus: http://www.abbottracing.net/product.php?id_product=204

@gally: The brakes were an Alcon racing set-up weren't they? Providing you dont destroy the boy work, most of the other parts should be easy enough to find, see as it is still 20% Puma
Yeah all the suspension components on the the front are bespoke so the owners club have kept oe parts to get copies made up. The track rod arms and wishbones are 40mm wider than standard.

Front brakes are Alcons set-up and they no longer make calipers/pads/discs for the car. :(

Rear brakes Focus items, handbrake cable from an escort estate! :eek: Doesn't worry me too much, i'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Mine gets a good kicking everytime i go out in it and has been good to me! The only time its broke is when i left it on the drive for a month and a coil blew, i blame that for not being used though... been used often since and no probs

Surely tho Gal, you don't have to replace like for like, what are they 4 pots? You could probably get alternative performance parts ie discs, pads?

It's not like that though, if it's going to be worth anything it needs to stay standard. If they are maintained they will be fine. The pads used are off a Porsche 924. Just need to find out about discs.

They are currently £400 for a set.

There are 300 FRP's left and some of the sheds are running other caliper set-ups because of cost to fix the standard ones.

Anyway . . .

I see what you mean about the brakes, it will obviously lose a bit of value if it isn't standard, depends how long you are going to keep it I guess, i.e how much you will have lost anyway by the time you sell it. For the extra bit of $ it will cost though, keeping them standard is best.
