Got my cut down plate this morning and fitted it,
i love the look, fits so much more flush with the bumper.
just hope i dont get too much unwanted attention for it!

My front end finally looks the way i want it, and i couldnt be happier!

What is the punishment if you get pulled with a plate that is smaller than standard?

Love it, this is exactly what I want for the ph1!

Apparently you can just about keep the original letter size and just lose the white space around the edge of the text?

Number Plates and the Law.

DVLA guidelines on how they should be displayed.
All registration marks including marks purchased through DVLA's sales scheme must be displayed in accordance with The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 (obtainable from Her Majesty's Stationery Office).
Rules for the display of number plates are set out in law, briefly these are: -

  • A number plate must be displayed at the front and rear of motor vehicles (with some exceptions).
  • Number Plates must be easy to read and meet the British Standard.
  • Lettering should be black on a white plate at the front and a yellow at the rear.
  • The background surface should be reflex-reflecting but the characters must not.
  • There are separate requirements for traditional number plates displayed on vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973.
  • Lettering and spacing must be of a set size. They must conform to one of the groups shown at:- Number plates fitted after 1 September 2001 or Number plates fitted before 1 September 2001. Number Plate Law

    The law states that,
    • You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
    • Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).
Offences may result in any or all of the following:
    • A fine of up to £1,000
    • The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN
    • The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test
Full details of the requirements are included in The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001
NUMBER PLATES FITTED AFTER 1 SEPTEMBER 2001

Number plates fitted after 1 September 2001 must display characters that meet the dimensions shown below.
Characters

  • Height 79mm

  • Width (except the figure 1 or letter l) 50mm

  • Stroke 14mm

  • Space between characters 11mm

  • Space between groups 33mm

  • Top, bottom and side margins (minimum) 11mm

  • Space between vertical lines 19mm
The character width has been slightly reduced from 57mm to 50mm to accommodate the Euro-symbol on the number plate.

**Found this on the internet. So in theory if you leave 11mm at top, bottom n both sides ou can't get pulled. **

I got stopped at a police checkpoint thing in my local town, routine stops for drink driving, they didn't mention my 3/4 plate at all.... They wouldn't see the front plate generally, unless they're loking for it.

this is how they come from fancy plates. no BS number or info of the printer so technically theyre completely illegal!
but it doesnt make the car unsafe so im not that bothered, ill drive about until i get stopped, then ill come on here b**ching about it :D

if you wanted the lettering the same size, youll have to take your custom elsewhere, not sure where though!

also,
clio1.2turbo, do you want to print details of the pre 09/2001 regulations!

  Chav Rocket
tbh i dont think thats really going to bother them, its the people with dodgy lettering and images that scream to be pulled over

dont have to have the bsau reg. numbers if the car is pre 2001 but you still have to hve were it was made! but to be fair i cant really talk as i don t even have a plate on the front of mine!

I was within a payment of getting silver-on-black sticky-plates on my S-plated MX-5, you can do that on pre-2000 motors tho IIRC

I got a producer for my 3/4er plate - had to get it changed and singed off by an MOT centre within 2 weeks - no points or fine ..
