im finished with optimax!

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner

running out of fuel the other day and stopped at esso station. paid 80.5 for super unleaded (97).

every week i have topped my car up with optimax at 87-88 per litre.

I use say 50 litres a week which is £3.50 a week difference. that over a year is nearly 200 sheets ! b*****ks to shell, that will pay for my servicing and i cant see my noticing any difference over 1 RON ?!?

im thinking of defecting. Im sure its cheaper to buy a bottle of engine cleaner that keep getting raped buying optimax.

Its all a con anyway.

Do you know about the chemical composition of optimax vs other fuels?

I dont. and until i do have proof that it makes a shade of difference i wont use it. Until then the cheapest stuff goes in.

Im sure they must sell engine cleaner/flush that cleans out the sh*t optimax is supposed to stop. As for protecting it, im sure that just balls too

We were running low on Saturday so we filled our MKII 172 up with Super Unleaded at Sainsburys 79.9p litre aint bad considering normal is 77.9p litre, the only problem we had to wait cos there was only one pump doing Super unleaded, cannot moan though saw two other MKII 172 leaving as we went in.

Never found that at all, always fill up at Tesco or Sainsbury and never found a problem, Put £35-£40 a week, Mostly do motorway journeys so that helps, but majority time the missus is never out of the 3 figures when motorway driving. Just make sure you never meet her on the road?

Stop what your doing NOW matey!

Texaco is terrible, it sits in lorrys for ages before it gets to them and it opten a mixture of things. Seriously, my mates a diesel fitter and sees the state of their lorrys. Also my Dad used to work for a firm that imported all the fuels and said they were the worst.

Youll find it will offer your engine little protection at all.

i was a bit upset the other day, I have always used optimax from day one but I filled up and it was 10p a litre more expensive than normal unleaded, 79.9 for nromal and 89.9 for optimax!

I asked the assistant why there was such a big difference as it is normally 5p and she said that the owner is a greedy bstard and just charges more cause he can!

i use tescos normal unleaded i did use optimax but like you all say i cant see the or notice the difference i think it is a good con by shell

So far Ive filled the tank with optimax 5 times and once with with 95. I dont know how much of it is the placebo effect, but the car didnt feel as responsive with 95, especially at lower revs. I must say though, at times, its quite annoying to see how some garages just take the biscuit. Had to stop at Q8 on Saturday on the A23 just before you get to Brighton, and the price for 98 was 93.something a litre!

Well at least she was honest, she could of tried filling you with some sort of cr#p.

I used to work for Jet, and we always had ppl asking the octane levels of the fuel, we used to feed them cr#p if it was pants car however if it was a nice car then we used to get the folder of the levels, we may have lost business if it was not correct octane levels, but at least they could never come back and complain that we f##ked there car up.

Im stuck with having to get the highest I can, I have a BP near me so Ultimate all the way. I also went to an Esso service station the other day and noticed their super U/L was 98ron so might use that as well.

If I use less the knock sensor will put the ECU in to safe mode - Japs think of everything!

While we are on the subject (although this really only applies to North Londeners) dont buy your Optimax at the Shell Garage on the Ridgeway in Enfield. My girlfriend knows of a guy who got his from there for his Impreza for ages and he found his car was getting slower and slower. He took it in to a garage and they eventually found a load of sludge in the bottom of his fuel tank that had been clogging up all his fuel pipes. After a bill of several hundred pounds he took his complaint to the Shell garage who admitted liability straight away. Apparently it had happened a few times to other customers as the petrol pumps and tanks are really old and are full of a sediment which was being pumped straight into the cars fuel tanks. It has not stopped them selling it though.

Only ever put Opti in the Cup but as I dont use her day in day out it doesnt bother me that it is a tad pricey. Now the company car is a whole different matter, as even though the cost is irrelevant I dont see the point of using anything other than boggo 95 ron stuff in the thing.

Trading standards have actually proved that of all the optimax claims that used to be in the ads, 1 is actually true.

It does in fact clean your engine, which obviously improves performance to a small extent and mpg.

All the other claims were not proven and so had to be retracted.

I cant be arsed finding the site that laid it all out.

Always used it from day one...renault recommend 98 RON, so thats what it gets.

I saw on Inside Grand Prix recently that the Ferrari F1 team claim using Shell fuel gives them an advantage over everyone else...as the fuel they use weighs less...so they can get the same mileage as other teams, but with 10kgs or so less weight.

Another good reason to stick it in the Cup...;)

i use normal unleaded in the valver- from tescos,
ive heard that the fuel is poo, but no one has proven it to me, so i guess ill just keep on using it !

i reckon all that optimax lark is bull sh*t any way.

Over here in The Netherlands Shell sells V-power, its basically the same as Optimax. But there seem to be a lot of problems with it lately. A lot of cars wont start because the injectors are stuck because of the gas.....

By the way, I always fill it up with super unleaded 98 and at the moment it costs €1.329, so thats a real rip-off from the government with all their taxes. For the same reason all new cars are about 30-50% more expensive than anywhere else. :(

Yeah my sainsburys is 78.5 for normal and 80.9 for super. 85.9 for optimanx so not going near that again. Its the Ron rating that has the most effect, filled up with total super and that felt as good as optimax.

As for cleaning agents, just put some STP, Wynns, Redline, Forte or other in every 6k miles and will keep injectors and fuel system OK.

Im pretty sure EVO done a test over 5000 miles or something...One running Optimax the other with 95RON...

After the 5000 miles were covered, they opened up the heads, and the one running Optimax was significantly cleaner...

Has anyone got that edition???

Ive been running Optimax from day one in the Willy, and will continue to untill its proven that its all Cow Poo...

Optimax has a higher RON rating so if the engine is designed for higher RON fuel (and the 172/182 are) then extra performance should be obtained against using supermarket stuff.

However if the 172/182 does make less power is a different matter as if the fuel doesnt make the engine knock then youll get the same power.

Mates uncle works within the industry doing something or other with fuels.

Apparently he remembers him saying something about there being a lot of problems with the 98ron fuels lately....will try to find out what exactly....lol

its all a conspiracy, who knows what to believe. For every plus point (pardon the pun) :) there is a negative point, down to personal choice at end of the day probably. Maybe we are mugs buying it, but it gives peace of mind for some. lol
