I'm new, 172 a good move?

  On the look out...
Hi

I sold my GTI-6 on Saturday and have since been looking on PH, AT and ebay at 172's. My budget is around the 3k mark.

Now I prefer the look of the phase 2's but I quite like how you don't see many ph1's on the road. In an ideal world I'd get a standard(ish) ph2 with 70k, belts done, decent history and in good nick for 3k. Am I being realistic? Or am I more likely to be looking at a ph1?

Thanks.

You'd buy a minter than mint ph1 for £2.8-3k.

You'd buy a ropey ph2 for the same money.

(If I was you, i'd have kept the Gti6! lol)

Welcome to the club dude. x

I don't want ropey, but I'd be up for tidying one up a little. Just not sure the look of a ph1 is for me.

The GTI-6 was a good car, but I'd had it for 2 years and just fancied a change.

PM Edd on here. He has a mint black ph1 for 3k. 65k miles on coilovers and belts been done too.

I think its a good move, as mice as gti-6's are they are all on high mileage these days and imo the engine isn't as sweet as the 172 lump, 172's seem a lot more rev happy.
I'm pretty sure if you keep you're eye out you'll find a nice ph2 on the 70k mark for that money easily.
Good luck and welcome to the club.

It hasn't got red wheels has it? One has been listed on pistonheads today that is on ktec coilovers and has red wheels.

Thing I have noticed with ph1's is that you can pic one up on 100k with little history needing belts doing and tax for about 1500. But I bet it would be quite easy to spend a grand on one getting it upto scratch. So I'd certainly prefer to spend 2500 on one that has had an easy life, makes no sense at all buying cheap unless its just a track toy.

^ That ph1 is beautiful.

I got my ph2 with FSH, belts done, on 70k, completely std, mint interior for under £3k. If you're a good negotiator and you can travel then it's easy.

£3k will get you a nice ph2 these days.

Ph1's are an aquired taste imo... I love the front end (like absolutely love it!) but I think the ph2 is better everywhere else.

Sounds promising.
I take it that it is fairly easy to fit a ph2 rear bumper on a ph1 though?

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Pish easy mate along with phs2 lights. I'm gonna be doing lights but keeping my phs1 bumper...

Easy to change the rear end yes but the ph2 rear matches the lines of the ph2 front so IMO doesn't quite look right from side on.

The interior in the ph2 (dash) is far superior IMO... It's no Audi but it's an improvement! Lol.

go for a phase 1 it more rare on the roads (personally speaking round my town) and after being in my mates phase 2 think my phase 1 feels my raw and a bit more aggressive.

Id much rather a top end Phase 1 (which 3k will secure) than an okay-ish Phase 2.

Also, the Phase 1 has a throttle cable as opose to the Phase 2's fly by wire, alot of people maintain that they are both the same pace but after having a Phase 1 and now a 182 im in no doubt the throttle cable is a better set-up (i prefer it anyway)

The 172 is probably on a par with a GTi-6 tbf, you wont regret it which ever you opt for!

Have you been to have a look at any 172s yet? the differences between ph1 and ph2 really are the looks and a couple of extra toys ie climate.

  Ph1 172.
How old are you btw? Have you checked the insurance costs? It's probably not much of an issue coming from a gti-6, but i thought i'd ask.

I'm 25, don't think insurance will be a problem.

I've spent bank holiday looking at various phase 1 172's all between 1750 and 2350 and jesus wept they were rough! I am going to have to stop being tight.

i sold my gti6 2 years ago and picked my 2003 53 plate 172 63k 1 owner frsh cruise control option aswell for £3k and has been fantastic and is in mint condition

that was nearly 2 years ago aswell so yeh 3k will get you a good one

A change for the better imo.
Get a ph 2 mate if you can, difficult to find a good one for 3k but it's possible. 3.5k and you'll have no worries.

I've driven a couple of ph2's but in all honesty I prefer the ph1's, just feels more involved. Ph2's are better looking though.

I was really, really disapointed when I bought a gti-6. I'd gone from a cracker of a 106 xsi to a car with 60 more horsepower, but no excitement or fun. So going to a 172 can only be a good move. I bloody love my Ph1.
