I'm Probably a bit old for this but...

  BG 182 FF
G'day to all you fine Clio enthusiasts!

My name is Dan but am usually refered to as Simmo and I have finally joined the wonderful world of Renault Sport Clio ownership at the ripe old age of...wait for it...35!

I am now the proud owner of a 2004 "Black Gold" Renault Sport Clio 182 with cup packs (it was very nearly a 2.0l turbo "star silver" Vauxhal Astra Coupe - that was a close call!) and I LOVE IT!!!

This is my first car to be really proud of after many years of forgettable motoring (mostly Vauxhalls - 1.2 Nova. 1.4 Corsa, 1.8 Astra SRi, 1.2 Corsa AUTO and the current "Daddy Wagon" 1.8 Astra ESTATE - with a brief affair with a Rover 216 SLi!) and I can't wait to do a little tinkering to what has so far proved to be a magnificent little car.

The question that I seem to share with EVERYONE is where to start... Brakes? Exhaust? Induction? Remap? Big white stripes? (just kidding on the last one!)

So I open myself up to suggestions and look forward to being a part of the ClioSport gang!

Happy Motoring!

That's good to hear! I was getting a bit worried that I should be on the "Classic Cars for Respectable Gentlemen" forum! A few of my more "conservative" colleagues have suggested that my car is more suited to a more youthful driver but I feel that I now have the correct balance of experience and cash-flow to fully enjoy a car I wished I had 10 years ago!

otherwise leave it as is, there's enough ruined examples out there already

You'll have to bare with me if I ask stupid questions but...

By "Inlets" do you mean matching? How does this help and is it expensive? Also doesn't a good induction kit help power gains?

TBH mate, if you want more power, you have the wrong car. Without ITB's, Turbo or Supercharger (££££'s) you will maybe gain a few bhp. If you want to modify it though, go with upgrading brakes, suspension etc, and do some track day's, then you will see what it is about.

To echo what that old man in the Saab said, personally 182's should be enjoyed for what they are.

If you want a really fast car, buy a really fast car ;)

Welcome btw, your not old, it just took you a bit longer to catch on haha

You fellas make a lot of sense. I love the way the car handles and that is the reason I went for the Clio in the first place (after reading the EVO review!)

It seems that without spending muchos dollars I'd be advised to trust the boys at Renault and leave well alone.

So...any advice on brakes and suspension set up???

If your car has the cup pack suspension it'll be pretty good out of the box, there are plenty of coilover options available (disounts to be had by forum club members, its worth the £10 sign up btw)

Brakes, alot of folk go for the braided lines and brembo set up which is circa £170-£200 (from memory )

They are awesome fun though mate, ive got a 182 and adore it!

As far as brakes go, it depends what you are going to do with it. You could upgrade to bigger 4 pot's but that would be utterly pointless if you don't do trackdays. Some Brembo discs and fast road pads, braided lines and decent brake fluid (£300 ish) should see you a really noticeable difference.

Suspension, I'm not massively sure on this, some decent coilovers would definitely help.

Yes mate when i mentioned inlets matching is the way forward, although the gains are not massive on 182's it certainly made a difference to mine.

With Air filters etc id recommend just getting a panel filter, the standard air box is well designed and does well.

Brakes id uprate the fluid, fit braided lines, Brembo HC discs and some ferodo DS2500's

De-cat and and a decent exhaust makes it sound quicker and frees the revs a little

Finish it all with a nice custom map and it will feel a lot better. I have done all of the above and it does make a nice difference. Im just greedy and am having cams fittedon thursday lol

Ok so I'm going to start with the brakes - seems sensible to make the car stop well!

Looking at front discs (my front discs need replacing in the near future any way) what do you think of the Brembo Max Groved discs?

K-Tec have them for £129 http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2115&appid=2 but I've seen them on ebay for £80 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BREMBO-MAX-FR...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item255ddbb41f do you know why they are so much cheaper - are they likely to be genuine/different quality etc???

Also there any reason why I can't wait a month or two to upgrade the rear discs or should I do them at the same time?

Thanks for all the responses. You guys rock!

You're still shopping in the wrong place.

Google, the brembo shop.

The discs for the 172 are hilariously cheap, god knows how they are making any money, but they are genuine.

Oh and as for the rear's, the rear discs should include a bearing and the ABS ring when you buy them, if not it's a right ball ache, and to be honest on the 172 the rear brakes are quite low load anyway, so no, no reason to wait a while if they're still good.

Brembo High Carbon's are the proffered one's I think, they are a bit more money though. Generally, Grooved/Slotted discs are more prone to cracking, and are noisier, which can get annoying on the road. I would go with:

Discs: http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2786&appid=2

Pads: http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2692&appid=2

Lines: http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2228&appid=2

And some Dot 4 fluid, they have that too I think.

The rear's can be upgraded if you want, a lot of people just keep them standard.

Yeah you can find some good deals if you shop around a bit, ebay and the for sale section here and a little patience is the best way! Oh and cough upthe tenner and join you tight arse lol! :rasp:

We race on Brembo discs at £45 a go,standard rears as they don't do much anyway.Braided lines will give a much better "feel" to the pedal and some Ferodo 2500 pads in the front, sorted. Then go and enjoy your car.

Welcome buddy. Don't feel old. Roy Munson on here is 50 IIRC ;)

It can be so easy to throw lots of money at the clio's. It becomes an adiction, but tbh they dont need that much doing to them, just a few things to smothen it all out.

worry not chap, tonys 74 so your a kitten!

You're damn right - best advice I've had! I've only been on here for one day and I've got a much clearer plan of what work I'd like to do.

I set my classes a test this morning and have been trawling t'internet for Brembo front discs (I do like the Brembo Max discs) and pads while they work. :approve:

I think I'll ask the wife if she'll buy me some braided lines for christmas! ;)

and the kids are going to be getting a K&N panel filter and a remap for their christmas presents!

IMO, the simple engine mods that people have mentioned enhance the road driving a lot.... Although they don't give huge outright HP gains, (maybe 15hp) they give you a lot more accessible power, more mid range and a smoother torque curve. As said though, by far the greatest benefits to be had are in the handling department.

Top advice in here... Welcome by the way!

The thing I love about my clio is it's useable power... I've had some much more powerful cars but none have been as useable as the clio. The chassis handles the power so well too so you can really enjoy it without being Lewis Hamilton!

I've not upgraded my brakes yet as they were fairly new when I got it but tbh they cope well for road driving... I've only once got them to the point of useless and that was driving like a complete dick for about 20 minutes showing a mate what it can do!

I've added a set of coilovers more for looks but they do improve the handling.

I've also put a KTEC SS exhaust on for a bit more noise! I personally don't think it's effected the performance at all! (Oh and also a panel filter).

Most important things I think are keeping on top of the servicing to keep it healthy and TYRES! Keep it on decent tyres as without these the brakes, power and handling are useless!!!

welcome fellow 30+ member

welcome and i am glad your enjoying the 182

my two pence worth is, panel filter, remove the acoustic valve from one of the air feeds, if your still on the std mild steel exhaust that is prob due a change so a stainless steel jobby (loads to choose from) and some are not much louder than std if you keep your cat in place, maybe a remap as well mate it helps the mid range and and kangaroo'ing in the cold mornings. if your route to/from work covers a nice backroad when the brakes are needed some brembo hc discs (cheap and ace) some braided hoses and some decent front pads, leave the rear brakes all std.

Hello mate - and welcome. It's good to see another mature CS'er on here. We'll soon be taking over...

To be honest, the Trophy still brings a smile to my face (now after 3 years) when I take it out and I expect your 182 will do the same. In terms of modifications I have gone with mild mod's as pretty much outlined in this thread. The exhaust, matched inlets and remap gave a good mid-range improvement in my case and, in my opinion, at a reasonable cost. Might be worth considering... although I'd get the brakes sorted first. Braided lines, uprated fluid and good discs/pads - sorted.

Hi mate, I'm 28 myself, feel anchient sometimes when 18 year olds are all on here! Get it lowered first, they all sit a little high, then air filter(induction kit for sound, panel filter for performance) brake pads, then exhaust.

  BG 182 FF
Not wasting any time I've ordered Brembo Max front disks and Ferodo DS pads.

How easy are discs to replace? I'm not a complete novice with a socket set but should I get a profesional to fit them? I've not done it before.

Oh and I thought I'd better get round to posting a picture of my beauty...

Discs are a piece of piss to do, you can find guides on you tube etc, its reasonably straight forward!

Nice car mate. Where did you end up buying the front discs from? Brembo shop?

Dan

Thanks!

The Brembo Original HC disc were much cheaper from Brembo shop but I found the Max discs cheaper on ebay! (will probably go for the flat face Brembo original next time but thought I'd treat myself to some grooves this time round!)
