Image Cropping

Whats the easies/best way to crop an image to 1280x1024?

I've got some pics that are something crazy like 3000x3000 odd...I want to crop a section of the image and make it 1280x1024. Issue is I always seem to be distorting the pic...stretching it or squashing using complete guess work on photoshop..

any hints and tips?

Open the original pic, then open a new document and set it to the size you want.

Copy and paste it and then you can fiddle around with it.
