Impulse buy of 2020

  Evo 5 RS
Somehow ended up here last weekend. Quiet wet Sunday, wasn't doing anything and had been talking to the seller on eBay. Decided to go and view it.

Alas, here we are.

2008 WRX STi

57,000 miles.
Fully rebuilt 12,000 miles ago with every nut and bolt, fully forged.

Brand new turbo (standard vf 48), AVCS heads fully reconditioned with Cosworth internals where ever possible inc high pressure oil pump and a heat treated crank. The list is endless.

Organic clutch that's heavier than an African Elephant.

Cobra turbo back exhaust system and sports cat that would anger Ned Flanders

Almost as far as I can tell full 330S spec, just without the name to go with it.

Engine is running a very modest 360-370BHP for the spec, very punchy low down.

As far as I can tell, a straight car from a genuine seller and club member with a lot of history and a lot of money thrown in the right places. Plan to take it to SMD in Newhaven for them to conduct oil service and check over. Engine is 500BHP capable so we'll see where we end up in 12 months time, I guess.

Surely gotta be right on the limit of that little TMIC ?

From what I can tell 400 or not too far above is around the limit on the STi top mount. The map from Indigo GT is super conservative, too.

From what I can tell from the paperwork and history, the gent that paid for the work simply wanted the most reliable engine he could have, and wasn't worried about cost (or big gains)

Forged engines are good, but they don't last 'long' as a daily.

Depending on how many miles you do, you could be looking at a refresh build after 12-15k.

I think there's probably some underlying reasons for that. Especially in terms of how they're driven, or how much tolerance is left. More importantly, who's built it, too. Don't currently plan on using it every day.

As this seems to be a complete overhaul it's not directly comparable to a build that's simply had pistons and rods thrown in, either. It's still anyone's guess, though.

That name has been through the mud lately, no?

Looks a decent purchase mind you, presumably feels a bit 'chunkier' than the Evo?

Yeah? To be fair, I've given up looking for tuners that haven't got at least 3 or 4 neckbeards throwing mud lol.

Certainly not mapped recently, car seems to be doing ok. Don't plan on driving it too much before a health check!

Compared to the Evo...it's just different. Chunkier, yes (heavier). Cabin quality is better by a fair margin, which I didn't expect.

It's just not the same, though. Not necessarily in a bad way at all. Just not the same to drive. Steering feel I much prefer in the Scoob, though

Yeah it does depend on what tolerances it was built to with ring gaps and such.

Yeah I didn't just mean heavier, I meant in terms of strength and build too. Cabins in them look miles ahead, but that's not hard.

Interesting about steering feel, are you sure it's not just heavy and therefore artificially feelsome? Rather than actually being feelsome.

I think with these the one thing to keep in mind (and I wasn't aware of just how bad this was until not long ago), is that the 2.5 suffers really badly with ring land failure, so any improvement is less of a gamble than stock.

Yeah, overall chunkier. It's 1500kg, so it's a good 200 pigglets heavier than an VIII, so that could well be a factor, sure. Either way I like the way it feels lol. Although I don't trust it quite as much yet

It's nice but I do think these look much better when they're a bit lairy. Bigger spoiler, bigger wheels etc.

Lovely power though, the sweet spot for these I think. Quick enough to enjoy, not mental enough to die.

I really like these. Hardly ever see them on the road. They’re well proportioned

You will be fine mate,as long as the engine was put together by a proper specialist with quality parts,Subarus in general have very tough engines even when they are standard,I was running 450bhp on my standard 2.0 STI block for 30,000 miles and the same engine is now in my wife's classic and it has not missed a beat... just take care of yours with Regular oil and filter changes and you will be fine(y).

Spot on mate, looks ace.

cheers ears

So how much did it set you back (roughly)
That’s a secret, less than it should have been IMO.
Factored in the next service for me and a new splitter.

Needs MOAR power. Maybe. I mean on a block like that the temptation is real.

Thanks dude, although the 2ltr is known for being stronger than the 2.5 lol. Engine feels strong I know that.

The previous owner changed the oil for 5w30 which isn’t really the right grade for a forged engine. Am booked in at SMD for the 24th to get the car serviced and checked over.

I have a few friends that run 5w30 oil in their Evos and Subaru’s as long as it’s a quality brand you should be fine maybe the builder of the engine recommended it to the previous owner....I run quite a thick oil 10w 60 fully synthetic but I allow my car to warm up and cool down properly before I really start pressing the Go peddle and Letting it idle a few minutes before switching it off..old school rules to turbocharged ownership Lol.

Spoke to the builders, they recommend 10w60 lol. He said it shouldn't matter too much but other specalists seem to think 10w50 to 40 is a good grade for a forged motor. Not sure how the owner then surmised 5w30.

That's a decent amount of car for the money!

Yep! Will see what SMD find but it seems to run well. Have worked out from what I can today that the engine has covered a little more than what the previous owner was claiming, but the car is only on 57,000 so it's not the end of the world, especially considering what I paid.

Surely just a rounding error though? (Did you see my latest addition? :D)

lol, no not a rounding error but have just confirmed with the engine builder at what mileage the engine was dropped in so I have a definite figure!

No I haven't mate, will have a look now

A lot of car for not a lot of money.

Let me know how you get on as it could be a good alternative to the Evo.
