Inbuilt webcam not working..?

Ian

Hey,

trying to help a friend. They have one of those tiny little Advent notebook-type-thing.. things. They want to use the webcam on it, but it won't work. The light next to it is on and there's a little icon on the taskbar which does nothing except show up as "Web/cam" when hovered over.

The software provided with it is called "CyberLink YouCam" and when opened it comes up with the error message:

"Cannot connect to this video device( USB Video Device ). Please select another capture device via Settings or close any applications that may be using this video device and restart YouCam."

When trying to set it up in WLM I get the message:

"Cannot connect to this webcam. Close any programs that may be using your webcam, and choose Set Up Audio and Video to try again."

Any ideas as to how to sort it?

Cheers,
Ian

I could tell by the time it took you to write your reply that it wasn't going to be constructive Alan. :)

For the man-points I should probably say yes, but erm, no, that's not it pal!

Check the processes that are running?
Make sure the webcam software is installed properly?

If in doubt, google the webcam name etc.

If I had dameware I'd bob on and have a look, but Im not at work lol!

I'm usually alright with stuff like this, but I'm struggling with this one! I've gone:

My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Imaging Devices -> USB Video Device #2 (there is no #1) -> Update Driver -> Yes, this time only -> Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)

and it's shown the default location as:

C:\Applications\Drivers\WLAN\Liteon\RTL8187B\WinXP

Can't find that on here anyhere though: http://www.liteonit.eu/firmware-and-other.html

Oh and I couldn't see any other processes that would be interfering.

Btw it's a Advent 4490 as far as I can tell. The webcam shows up in My Computer and there's an option to test it under properties and apparently it passes, but if you double click it then it still doesn't work.

I'm struggling tbh

did the drivers install properly? See I'd usually suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the software, but if its inbuilt you probably cant do that?

I dont have webcam so I cant even have a nose around mine see if I can suggest anything!

I shall keep pondering it for you tho

Well it's got a directory with back-up drivers (C:\Application Data\Drivers, or something like that), but I can't see anything to do with the webcam. Had a browse round on the net, but it hardly gets a mention. Everything about it seems to suggest that it will work; the blue light, the passed test, the taskbar icon, the on/off function key etc are all showing what they should do.

I'll have another quick look at it tomorrow, but otherwise I'll pass it off as a lost cause, not got the time or expertise to do much more than that. If all else fails I'll just tell them to get a Mac lol. Cheers for your suggestions anyway, may get back to you tomorrow. :)
