increasing performance without telling your insurance company?

  MKV Golf GTi (240bhp)
I was just wondering if there are any performance mods that you can make where you dont have to tell the insurance company - maybe there arent any but thought it was worth an ask,

for example would you need to tell them if you got the car chipped?

Depends wether or not you stack it and they then check it. Some companies do take out thorough checks on cars that have been written off. I've always found for the difference it makes to my insurance I might as well tell them. I remember someone on here that rolled their clio and the insurance wouldn't pay out because of his mods.

If you got your cra chipped and then crashed and the insurance company found out your policy will more than likely be made void!

A mate of mine did that and cos the police were called his car was checked to see if it was standard but it wasn't and his policy was made void and he was also prosecuted for having invalid insurance.

Be very careful indeedy!

The inlet matching/flowing wouldnt have to be announced I dont think and it can give you good gains. Also I think you could get away with panel filters and maybe a sports cat etc.

From my experience ~~ a long time !!!:( .Most of my cars have been competition cars,or very highly modified. When needed to be put "on the road" for various rallies.I have used a a specialist insurance insurance company.I declare everything, right down to the brake pad material :approve: .I then know, that I am 100%.Legal.On two occasions (different cars !) I have had accidents, resulting in Total losses  .What a pleasure when the inexperienced assessor comes and tells you,"but this is modified !!!,yes but this is the sheet ~~~ engineers report ~~ YOUR insurance company requested ~~~ Now go away and send me a cheque, for the full amount ~~~~ Worked every time. One of the times,I ended up with the salvage and some cash  .
Like most things relative to insurances, houses cars or whatever. They gladly take your hard earned cash in premiums, but are reluctant to pay out.You can be be lucky and get away with it,~~~ or unlucky and lose the lot.My advice for what it is worth, declare everything,Non ~~ original parts ~~ including wheels, seats the lot ~~ it is only a letter to the insurance company ~~~ could save you your car.

Unfortunatly you should tell them if you make any real changes to your car - even ones that will have no effect on performance. For example if you put new alloys on your car and don't tell them they could potentially turn down your claim if your car or wheels are stolen as they will claim that you changing them made it more likely to be nicked.

If you did chip the car and hit someone and they put in a personal injury claim your car will be fully inspected. If they find the chip they will declare your insurance void and you coluld be potentially left with a bill for the rest of your life.

Can only recommend telling them, especially as most of the time the increase in cost is less than what you think it will be. Elephant seem to charge £10 for most things!

I was told by them when ringing up to declare uprated pads/discs/lines that it was only the change in discs that I needed to tell them about.

Though I'm sure they'd soon change their tune if I mowed down some old dear with stone cold race-spec pads that were unable to stop until hot...

Thanks for all the help - I wouldnt really get any mods done without telling the insurance company, i was just trying to see if there were mods that were undetectable by the insurance company if you did have a crash....

thanks again for all the info guys
