Induction kit problem

  Racing Blue 182
I have just fitted a piper cross viper onto my 182. Which doesn't seem to have done a lot but it seems to lose power around the mid range. So fine low revs, then drops and kicks in again like the cam at around 4000rpm. My mechanic mate thinks that a remap will do the job as this will tell the ECU that it's cold air being taken in and itll accommodate for the extra amounts of air.

I can't afford a remap atm but I have bought a rubbish chip that I know won't have any affect performance wise but it claims to tell the ECU about the cold air intake. Has anyone had this problem before or any cheap fixes to this problem as I don't wanna waste more money buying and fitting a panel air filter in the original air box.

Cheers

Luke

You may find that the standard air box produces better power.

Without a map to suit it would be best to take it off, i found the same when i fitted the v6 airbox to a standard car. With an rstuner map it was fine.

A panel is probably the best way to go for power gains tbh dude, IKs are mainly for noise purposes only.

Yeah that's what I thought. I have the cold air feed attached, would it produce a better sound without this fitted. Obviously I don't wanna spend all that money again so this rubbish chip thing. If it acts like a remap, it might help this problem right?

Thanks for all your help guys. Just want a cheap fix! :/

You have given yourself the answer - mapping is IMPORTANT. In very basic terms, if you fit the shitty chip, worst case is your engine will either get too much or too little fuel, and end up a big paperweight.

It's up to you on the air filter dude, id personally not fit it

with the experience I have had a ph1 172 airbox with a silicone bend offers good noise with no performance loss, and you can pick them up cheaply in the F/S section

Ok, well all I am going to do is fit it and see if it rectifies the problem, I have no faith that it will "increase bhp by 15!" but it claims that it will tell the ECU some of the things that a remap will, so maybe itll sort this out. But if not I'll just take it out! I wanted the sound aspect of the induction kit but it doesn't seem to make any difference?! Will it help if i removed the cold air feed?

If this doesn't work I will take it out and replace the original airbox and buy a k&n air filter or something! However, that's more unecessary money!

the chip will change your AFR - a car can run and accellerate ok with AFR's at a dangerous level - Unless you have the equipment to read AFR's the only way you will know it is dangerous is when your engine fails!

I can't believe people can skimp on cheap s**tty chips when you are talking about something that is so important! It's not just as simple as if it goes worse you take it back out, it could cause serious damage!

Out of interest, how much did you pay for your induction kit, and how much for this chip?

Is it an actual chip, or just a resistor?

Yes, pulling the pipe off will make it noiser, but the whole point of in enclosed induction kit is it is supposed to be inclosed

where does this cheap chip fit, if its one im thinking of dont your need and airflow meter for you to fit it? has the clio doesnt have air flow meters. plus if it did it would more than likely melt your spark plugs and f**k your engine up.

The Ph1 setup is by far the most effective besides changing the inlet manifold. It also sounds throaty as well, not sure why anyone would change it.

I think it's just a resistor thing. It's gonna be shite. Think I might just take it out and start again with just a panel filter. I paid £50 for it used as I thought it was a bargain coz they are £220 new.

This is the link for the rubbish chip. I know or won't do anything but thought it might work with the induction kit to reduce this impact on the power at mid range.

Forgive me for being such an idiot. Don't really have any idea about cars just got told that this kit might make it sound better! But it hasnt either. What a WOFTAM!

Unless this problem isnt anything to do with it!? I hope not!

Cheers for all your help guys.

You're not an idiot mate, we all have to start out somewhere, just don't fit that restistor! Most resistors trick the ECU into thinking the car is constantly cold - this is because when cold, cars run rich, it helps warm the car up faster. The idea behind it is to add more fuel to compensate for more air, but the reality is it ends up adding the wrong amount, and worst case is it will lead to engine damage, bore wash, massive fuel consumption, poor running - the list of problems go on.

Renault spent millions developing a very good adaptive ECU, a £1.50 resistor won't do a better job - unfortunately it's very easy to fall for all the sales talk - Id LOVE to see how it would advance ignition on some of the cars listed!

If you want it to sound better and you're not worried about perforance, then pull the cold air feed off , but if you don't mind getting your hands dirty, a ph1 172 airbox, combined with a silicone intake pipe will not loose you bhp, on a good day it may gain you 1 or 2 bhp, and it will sound nice under accelleration
