Sounds like your coolent temperature sensor or its relevent wiring gone wrong its a common problem.
Your right in some way if the aux belt snams the power stearing and coolent pump dies but theat would mean the coolent gets hot and never goes down and your power stearing disappears and its very heavy to stear not very light.

As for why the stearings gone light have u hit any curbs sounds like your tracking maybe out.

Guess it's not the belt then, but the lack of power and the engine dying then coming back to life again that's just weird.

yes have hit curb's one at the rear and the front passenger side but did'nt think much of it till last week, is it expensive to put the tracking right.

  Monaco Blue Mk2
£30 tops for tracking.

My stearing was very light and twitchy when my tracking was out, I couldn't be arsed getting it sorted straight away as it wasn't bothering me too much, ended up needing a new front o/s tyre as it hand worn loads and uneavenly compared to others.

What happens to the car if rain water were to get in the induction kit and carried onto through into the engine.
If enought got in it could cease the engine up but you'd need to get a fair bit in I'me never heard of it unless you drive thoguth deep pudedls with low mounted air intakes.

Had tyres and tracking done at just Tyres for £190 quid, car feels brillant know. Also called the AA Guy out to fix the coolant, there was alot of pressure that had built up and as he unscrewed the ca to the coolant it pop of around 2ft in air bit weird.
