induction

  Clio 172
What they have done here is fitted a universal air filter to the cold air feed into the air box and then removed the warm air feed from the top of the manifold leaving a big hole into the original airbox letting unfiltered air in. Now unless they have left the air filter inside the original box that isn't a good thing to let the air in unfiltered, and if they have left the original filter in there...well, double filtration for extra filtered air! Haha.

You need a kit filter for this engine. I had one years ago for my 1.2 mk1 Clio oasis, K&N removed the whole airbox set up and fitted a nice filter that sounded class at the time. No performance gains to be had from it though. Should look like the attached photo if you get the right kit!

also. WELCOME! :)

They've probably left the stock filter inside the filter box too lol, seen this done many times before. Dual filtration FTW

thanks for you reply,i was just wondering if i done what i saw on the pic/link i posted would it make it sound better or would i need a kit filter like you said to make that noise of air sucking?? sorry for the questions i just want to mess around with my clio at a low cost lol. as the clio i got is in really good condition with only 43k on the clock and it passes every m.o.t first time, the only thing iv changed on it is the break pads, disks, full standard exhaust and a starter motor as my gran who had the car from new only drove it like 3 times a month. is there anything else i could do thats cheap to make it better?? many thanks again :)

It sounds like its already in top shape from what you have said. My advice would be leave it well alone and just enjoy driving a low mileage tidy little Clio! :) If its really as good as it sounds and you really want to play about with it, don't "bodge" the induction kit, save the money and get a proper one like I have posted. The picture in the link above you posted isn't healthy. The car theoretically has two air box's fitted and this will be restricting the air flow.

The kit you need is here >>> http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/perfo.../1-2/kn-filters-57i-performance-induction-kit

To me that looks pretty cheap, its a kit that will bolt straight in and cause no problems. They make the 1.2 sound really guttsy as well! I loved mine!

thanks for the fast reply! i will go for that option of induction kit,how ever do they do a cheaper version as funds are low and like i said i dont want to spend out on it as iv had it given to me, and would you possibly know where i could get a clip that holds the rear bumper on(the 1 on the off side outer clip) if that makes sense lol i contacted renault and they said they were £15!! seems a bit excessive for a small clip and all the scrap yards around me hasn't got any clio mk 1s in their yards. thanks again for your advise and help :) ashley

Not sure about the clip. Try talking to Adam from Renault Wolverhampton on here (in the traders section of the forums) he often does stuff cheaper than main parts officers. Posting a picture of the part would probably help as well because I have zero idea what you are talking about! ;)

As for the induction kit, I dont think there are any others that are a straight fit for your car. They aren't a very regularly modified engine so most manufacturers don't bother making kits for them. You can always look at getting a panel style filter and dropping one of those in the original box. I have also tried this in the past and it makes zero difference to noise due to the box still being in place but the filter will out live the car if you clean it regularly. >>>> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-C...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item56461e6917

I think that's the one for your car but you would need to check agains what you have in there already. Been a few years since I had my little oasis clio!
