Installing add-ons to a fitted alarm system

I realise that the general advice is to have an alarm system installed by an expert, but is it easy enough to add your own upgrades like proximity sensors
and tilt sensors? Is it just a case of securing the upgrade in the appropriate part of the car and running a couple of wires to an 'input panel'on the master box?

Does anyone know if the main manufacturers add-ons are compatible with other brands of system?

yeah, but you may have to activate some din switches to turn the features on
