Insurance companies not giving you quotes in writing

I'm currently due for renewal so I'm searching high and low for the best possible deal...

I have however found that a number of businesses get extremely arsey about providing you with a written 'official' quote, as they know exactly what you are going to do with it (get it beaten by someone else).

After some research I have found that insurance companies are legally obliged to provide you with this information in written form (its on the FSA website somewhere, I can't find it now:eek:).

EG I am trying to get brentacre to send me a proper quote via email so I can take this to flux. Here is what they sent me after asking for the quote via email

Brentacre said:
Luke give us a call if you wish to proceed, 01792 650933

Kind Regards,

John White

I think its properly arsey that they don't do this, people only want the best deal possible right?

I have replied with this:

Hello John,

I would like written confirmation if this is possible. I have also found legislation on the Financial Services Authority website which states you are legally obliged to provide me with this information in written form.

I hope you can assist me in this matter.

Best Regards,
Luke Broad.

Hopefully I will get somewhere with this.
It is like trying to draw blood from a stone !

I rang Flux yesterday and asked them to beat a price, they just asked how much. Couldn't get near it either :(

Never heard of a company ask for proof of a quote.

Flux tried to beat it without proof but they couldn't.

However as they have a 'thing' about beating quotes, they said if I could get proof of said quote they will better it for me - This is because my renewal is already a really good price but brentacre managed to beat it by £70

You can get it by email too?

Flux asked me if I wanted a written quote sent to me by post.

Interesting! I'm in exactly the same situation with Flux, never mentioned sending proof to me.

Part of my problem is that I want protected NCB and the schemes for Flux that do that have higher excesses than I want to pay. Said they just couldn't do a lower quote but they'd halve the premium increase for when I get power mods.

Have you tried HIC/Herts. They said they're a sister company of Flux. They gave me a quote a little bit more but with the excess and protection I wanted. Maybe give them a try for a quote and see if they can match Brentacre and then Flux can match them?

Flux are being fine about the whole thing and don't seem to have any problem sending out written quotes, most of the others I have used have issues about this for some reason :S

I will try them, thank you dude. Have you any idea how long it is before you can protect your ncb as I have got 3 years now :D

No worries. I've editted my post a bit as that might help a bit better. I think its from 4yrs NCB, I forgot to ask last year when I had 4 but I know most online companies want 4 to protect and 5 to guarantee.

Flux have been great this year, a bit gutted if I have to leave them, excellent service and the women sound fit to talk to lol

I also find this hugely frustrating... another thing I find frustrating is one of our competitors in particular REFUSE to quote unless they know how much you have been quoted elsewhere.

I trust you are having no problem getting a quote in writing from my company? We are happy to send these out but we do not include the club discount in the written quotation.

Thanks

That Really annoyed me when ringing round, why does it matter, surely they sould offer the best price they can with out needing too know what others are offering.

Because they "beat" the other price by so little its not worth it

on another note Sky were very good when i called for a price, didnt go with it in the end but the service was the best out of all the "specialist" i called.

Haven't rang your company mate as im only 20 and I'm after FC protection. I'm sure I wouldn't have any issues with you though :)

Can any one recommend what I can do about this as I haven't got an e mail back yet? Should I just keep pestering?

ah, ok yes I remember now. Make sure you try us next year.

Yes, I would recommend you phoning them and asking them again over the phone. I can see no reason whay they are not sending this out for you.

It is always worth mentioning the target rate and it can be useful when dealing with a specialist broker BUT refusing to quote someone with out a target rate is pretty shocking IMO.

That's good to know, many thanks.

HIC wont undercut Flux as they are the same company.

I've just looked through my quotes, and HIC were a couple of quid cheaper than my Flux renewal but with a £50 lower excess and protected no claims.

When I rang up Flux later to see if they could lower from the renewal price they sent me, the only way to protect my NCB was to put me on £150 higher excess than HIC offered for a total of £30 less premium. They said the scheme to protect my NCB had a higher excess. But even this quote couldn't match Brentacre for exactly the same thing. I will call Flux back to see why HIC offered me better.

So far I can't find anyone to match you guys though.

Why do you go with Brentarce? If they are cheapest. I found them very helpful, but only been with them a month so far.
Admittedly I couldn't get any company to send me a written quote, except elephant (who i was with at the time). Didn't bother me as everyone took my word for it when calling round but I like having things in writing, just in case they decided to change something!

insurance is a pain in the arse. i bought my ph1 172 because when i tried insurance it was £1,800 which i was happy to pay.
went to insure it yesterday and it was £2,300. i phoned up and complained and they just said insurance has gone up due to the recession. so im just going to have to dig deep and pay it. it should come down quite alot after the 1st year of owning it.....hopefully

I've had that kind of attitude from places before, I just tell them they're the first to quote

As I say, it is always worth mentioning your best target rate (and dont make it up!) as if that target rate is below what the specialist broker is going to quote they can speak to their underwriters to try and get movement in price, this is how it can work for us anyway.
Refusing to quote someone if they dont give you the target rate is different all together.
