Insurance companies reading information from keys.

Right I've heard this on and off ofr a few years now and always thought it was insurance companies just spreading a bit of fear to cut down insurance fraud etc.

Apparently insurance companies can read keys to see date and times of when the vehicle was started and how long the vehicle was running.

I was talking to a friend who programmes keys and unlocks ECUs etc for me and he siad it is possible but I still can't see how they can do it.

Anyone know anymore?

New mercs/bm's etc are similar, in that the dealership pugs in the key and can fault find/reset stuff, but how the hell would it work on a car without an electronic key?!
