insurance dilemma

hi all,

im 17 and have been driving a 1.4 clio sport replica. i am now bored and after a recent experience witha 182 i really really want one, my current insurance is 1200 a year which is okay i suppose on my dads company policy...

what i would like to know is, is there any young ones like me who do drive the real deal 2.0 litre and how much their insurance is etc...

running costs dont scare me as my 1.4 is averaging 30 miles to the gallon because i have to rev the t*ts off it to get a move on

anyway, hope some people can suggest what i could do to keep costs down etc?

the thing that mite help is...my dad owns a company where he holds a policy of perhaps 15 vehicles and the 1200 i pay is to be added to that policy to drive these said cars so surely by removing mine and adding a 172/182 there will be little difference

seriously your looking at 7k tpft

17. no ncb not even a years driving experience. It seems like you like to drive fast as you tend to rev the shite out of your 1.4 rs replica. I seriously consider your safety

yes thats on my own policy bt being on a trade policy makes all the difference....i dont want to brag but i can handle a 2.0 litre, i drive lots of high powered cars its part of my job. its just jumping into a 1.4 it feels so underpowered after driving high powered cars so i rev it more

Dont think any 17/18 year olds on here have a 172/182 let alone can help you out with a trade policy quote. Guess you can only know for sure if you ring through your dads company.

i work in insurance mate, if you do put car through your dads trade policy do not and i seriously mean it mod the car in anyway as a motor engineer would question why a car on a trade policy say was modded, secondly what does your dads trade policy cover? say you crashed on a saturday night with mates would it be covered?

i wouldnt even consider it you will KILL yourself in a RS clio.do you know what these cars are like?

ye course i agree with you, u think im just a 17 year old who wants to go fast everywhere...this isnt the case i want sumthing with a bigger engine as i do alot of motorway miles and keepin with the theme i really fancy a 182....i understand im goin to be opening a can of worms but before i get lots of negative comments i was just inquiring

it basically covers all vehicles owned by his firm can be used by any said drivers named on the policy and he just pays a set amount per annum.....i payed the difference when my car was added, hence the 1200 pounds

how long have you held your liceanse and are you gaining NCB?

Im currently in the process of looking for insurance for my 172. I am 18 on march 27th and i will have a years driving experience on may 2nd. I thought i would be able to get a payable quote with having 1 years NCB on the 28th of march. After many phone calls and many online quotes i relise i am going to have to wait until 2nd of may to insure it.

the best quote i have been able to get is £2200 from Bell (fully comp) starting on the 2nd of may. Mind you this is with an excess of £1000. If i want a lower excess it will cost around £2500 for insurance.

Currently if i do quotes online they all come out around £5000-8000 which ofcourse is silly. This is 17 year old with 10 months driving experience and no NCB, which is currently your position.

My advice is shop around checking how much it is going to cost etc but i think you will find that it will be silly amounts until you've had atleast one years driving experience :)

Goodluck
Carl.

after speaking to joe this afternoon (it was my 182 he has had all afternoon) i say if he wants 1 go for it. As far as i see it the £1200 was to add him as a driver to the company fleet not the car its self. he can and does drive (much to my annoyment) on that policy a rangerover sport and bentley continental as well as numerous other high powered cars really cannot see swaping the clio rep to a 182 making that much difference to the company "premiums".
at the end of the day if he wants a 182 and the insurance allows it then hell go for it lad. I had a rover 220 turbo tomcat at 18 and paid a fortune on insurance but glad i did it.

alright mate im a 20yr old with a 54 plate 182 cup had it for bout 7 month. im payin £1900 on me dads insurance, been driving since 17. so it is possible just costs alot. haha

Mate before you know it you will be "old" like me and you will have no problem getting insured, while your young you should make sure you drive careful avoid points and build up your NCB, most people have a prang in the first few years of driving and its better to do that in a car that wont cost you the earth in excess and then have the price jacked up after a claim. Also even if you make a little slip up and get 3 points somehow they will put the price up loads. personally i lived with a 1.4 for 2 years after passing my test just to make it a bit harder to get the dreaded 6 points in 2 years and have to start over again.
I'm now 26 and pay just over £400 for my R27, think long term mate, its the best way!:D

If your dad lets you drive a range rover sport and a bentley continental then I think he is just plain irresponsible. You could be the best driver in the world, but at 17 and without a years driving experience, I really think it would be matter of time before you crashed badly. It only takes one slight lapse of judgement, one error. I'm just slightly older than you, and have a 1.4 clio. i crashed in my first year and now the insurance companies rape you. A mate of mine went from a 1.2 clio to a saxo vts after just less than a years experience, same as you, didn't have to worry about insurance as his dad would pay it. He is lucky he lasted this long, but he crashed the other week really badly. Flipped the car 3 times without hitting the roof, it's amazing he came out alive.
I'd think about NCB too. At 21 with 4 years NCB, you could be driving a really tidy motor. At the moment, you won't be earning NCB, so when you come to get off your dad's policy, you will be hit with much higher insurance prices. What I'm doing is building up no claims, like you I want a 182, but that's just not really a viable option at the moment, you just gotta wait.

  1.6 focus zetec....
Its a clio RS not a fcuking rocket... they're not hard to handle so whats that b****cks about??

^
exactly.

When I was 21 I went from a 1.1 fiesta to a valver, massive step up in performance tbh, even at the age of 21 with three years experience I still found the valver quick until I got used to it.
