Insurance help..

Basically i'm turning 17 soon and i want to get a rough idea of what my insurance will be for a 1.2 as money may be tight with going back to 6th form. I just want some numbers to put into my head as an estimate, so if anyone can help it'll be much appreciated.

Thanks
Jay

Do some insurance quotes?

It's impossible to give you an accurate figure as it takes all sorts of things into consideration. 5mins work yourself and you'll have an answer.

They don't ask you 283 questions per-quote for fun, every little bit is relavent and decides whether they quote you 2.5k or 4.5k

Also, unless you have an identical postcode, occupation, history, car, age & NCB amongst all the other things there is absolutely no point comparing with friends/relatives/internet-people.

And for that matter it's not even a quote based on YOU it's a quote based on everyone else in the UK who has the same key statistics as you (age, sex, postcode, occupation etc) Expect a quote beyond your worst expectation.

Named driver may help, just remember that they will need to occasionally have your keys, even just to the shops and back every quarter

If you have bad circumstances then insurers won't like you and you'll get an expensive quote, but that's just tough luck. However if you are truthful throughout the entire quote and circumstances aren't bad then you'll get an alright quote. Unfortunately being 17 and male the "bad circumstances" quote will be ridiculous (several, several thousands) and the "good circumstances" (e.g. garaged, good postcode, an occupation with a good reputation, named drivers who have no points/claims etc) will still be a couple of thousand pounds... but it's all you've got.

Oh btw make sure you check Bell (owned by the same people who own Admiral and Elephant but specialise in younger drivers) as they didn't come up on price comparison sites last time I checked, but are very good value!

Finally, just been having a read and this is a really really good site for explaining everything if you want a useful read. Click the different bits down the left. http://www.carinsuranceexplained.com/car-insurance-explained/car-insurance-postcode-risk-list.html

The only way you'll find out is if you do a quote yourself mate.

It may be 2k+ as said in this thread but if you keep searching you will find it cheaper.

I was only £900 in my first year of driving on a 1.2.

I have been driving 2 and a half years now and I pay £800 on a 1.8 Astra so keep shopping !!

Also, unless you have an identical postcode, occupation, history, car, age & NCB amongst all the other things don't even bother asking for "estimates" or comparing quotes with friends or even more stupid, people on the internet. I'm not trying to be unhelpful, just truthful and thus helpful xD

Naa its great help thanks.. yeah i have a garage but not sure about postcode and the named drivers all have no points or claims.
But can someone link me to other insurers (like not well known) cos i also heard that some of the compare website are sh*t for insurance quotes

Your better to call insurers up direct. Comparison websites are all crap.

It might take you a while to call them all up and go through quotes but you'll save £££ by doing it.

I can't even imagine how boring it would be to call up and get a quote from a few insurers, let alone 5+ xD

Comparison sites DO charge commission after all (Bell/Admiral/Elephant were roughly £100 cheaper (which was errr about 5 - 10%) when I went to their website direct) but there's nothing wrong with using a comparison site to find out who the cheap companies are, and then just going straight to the company. The link I gave you covers all of this and more, but another good tip that popped into my head is, if you can, pay for it in one lump sum. If you pay monthly then you effectively owe them money, aka a loan which means you will changed interest. 10% on a few thousand pounds makes a huge difference. Obviously paying for it in one go all depends on how good you are at saving or how easily your parents give in when you ask them for a loan...

stick your mum on as a named driver, reason for this is because in insurance females are consider less of a risk than males, also adding a named driver also lowers the rating factors because its considered a "shared risk", look out for online discounts too, some companies do 15% online discount aswell as additional discounts if you take out or have insurance with them already. Always haggle too as the majority of insurance advisers are on commission and for some if they don't hit there targets at the end of the month they get layed off so they are more than likely sort out a deal for you. Consider doing a pass plus because as well because with some companies they give you a nice discount for having that too. And one last thing be weary off shorter term insurance's e.g a 10 month policy and you'll get a 1 years no claims bonus, sounds good at the time because your paying less and you get a years no claims discount, in some cases with the no claims bonus you can only use it with that company and no other, so if you decided to move companies after the 10 months you'll be back to 0 no claims and out of pocket. Sorry for the essay dude, if you need any help though holla because its my day job :)

Bell/admiral/elepant are all around £75 more if I get a quote direct form them and not through comparethemarket.com

personally i wouldnt use price comparison sites with your real details, not only will they give you a hiked up price,
but theyll save your details and give you the same hiked up price when you go to the companies direct!!

just note, adding yourself as a named driver doesnt make it that much cheaper anymore, and its technically insurance fraud if you are in face the main driver!

add as many low risk drivers as named drivers as possible, and hope for the best im afraid.

my first year was £2300 including mods and claims, after 2 years of driving.
now its £600 full comp on a 1.8 16v clio ;)
