Insurance is doing my head in!!!!

  320d
It looks like i'm going to have to pay circa £1600 F/C for my 1.2 16v which tbh i think is rediculous. Its a slow car thar isnt worth very much, i drive 7000 miles a year, its not modified in any way.

Then to realy take the p**s i will get stupid quotes of £3000+ and then the cheecky b**tards will ring me up asking if i'm still looking and to nock down the price by £100 why do they waste their breath.

my best quote so far is £1767.15 with direct line inc 1 years motorcycle ncb. This will go down to £1590 if my mum insures her car with them.

I'm not willing to go tptf though because if the worst does happen i will then be carless and moneyless.

If your young thats what happens.

My 1.0 Micra cost me £1840 !!!!
Thats when i was 17 and passed to insure F/C in my name.

It started to come down slowly, but to be legal and legit i had to sacrifice it. Built up the no claims and now get the return.

Yes its a pain and they rip you off left right an centre, but what can you do :(

Keep it legal!

It will soon come down. Try and do Pass Plus if you can, specific companies give you good discount.

It's a joke really, it's £1600 profit for them, unless you claim, in which case they make you pay for it big time for the following years.

I would actually go as far as to say it's cheaper to drive without insurance and get caught after a year. (For a new driver).

Put ur parents on the policy mate, especially ur mum. All u have to do is put her as a named driver and itll drop a fair amount. or just go as a named driver for your first 2 years until u can afford ur own policy then go policy holder, thats what iv done.

This is why we have uninsured drivers on our roads, insurance companys dont help atall. But in reality now you would get caught much quicker, get 6 points which would lose me my licence.

but as has been said above atleast i can build up ncb and then be able to get a nice car sooner than if i remained under my dads name on his car. only cost £675 this year but its illegal i know and i have a proper job now so have bit the bullet.

This is also illegal, known as insurance fronting.
(dedicated threads to this many times!)

Unless the policy holder drives the car regularly, the policy is technically null and void.

Insurance companies are wise to this and can find out.

Not a good suggestion to keep it legal.

I made 2 claims (none fault) over 2.5 years as a named driver without any issue's. The latter even went to court lol. Id say being a named driver up untill your 21 is an idea if you dont want to pay out your arse for insurance.

If there was no way to get around it, there would be fewer uninsured people.. But I can think of a couple of ways to get round it.

Mainly, don't use the car to get to work (pain in the arse, but this is where most mistakes happen- in your daily routine).

Then, as long as everything about the car is cosha, the only thing that would raise a reg flag is police ANPR. But to get around that, just clone a number plate. Police try and pull you? Just run.

Sounds dreadful, and is not something I would do, but that's the thought train I'd have if I was more underground.

It used to be easy enough to get away with Insurance Fronting...

Nowdays the Insurance Companies keep tabs on such cases and also the Police know very well what young drivers do.

IMHO its not worth the risk as you will end up uninsured at the end of the day which will screw you up later.

Worth a read.

At least with your own policy you start to build up your no claims also.

Was at dinner the other day, and there was a family on the next table.

A lass (assume she was 17/18) learning to drive was telling her family how she was going to buy this car for £1500 or so. But wasn't sure what to do about insurance.

Her brother (looked about 30) chirped in with some bullshit about insurance fronting (didn't call it that) and said "everyone" does it. And it's how to start driving.

I shook my head in shame as I ate the haggard steak.. At both..

Also just to point out to anyone insuring a vehicle in parents name.

The car also needs to be registered to the policy holder.

If not they do bump the premium up anyway. So changing the car back to your name of ownership adds another owner to the vehicle. Which also you would have to take into consideration.

Insurance companies are also passing on details to various Fraud Investigation Agencies. A lot to loose if your caught out unfortunatley.

I still can't see how they car refuse if you do the above properly..

Car in your dad's name, insurance in your dad's name with you as a named driver.

You crash... You just play the "Ahhh it's my dad's car, he's going to kill me!!" card.

And for the record, it's not my car, it's my folks car and they only let me use it when I pull my weight around the house. Can't see how that one could be refused in court.

This is true.

It has been known for insurance companies to do simple background checking.

Theres been cases where they have asked neighbours "who drives the car"
Taken cctv from say ur college etc to see whos been drivign the car.

And sometimes the obvious belongings in the car.

Its just like anything, you can bend the rules as much to get away with X.

Just like not declaring mods on a vehicle and trying to get away with it by removing said items when you crash....
Illegal but people do run the risk.

  BMW M4; S1000 RR
Agreed.

I would imagine insurers know all this, but the fact most people lump it and pay still offsets the cost of payouts through the small percentage of uninsured people....

I didn't declare an exhaust or remap on my last car (it looked fairly standard in fairness).

Got pulled on my way to work, they commented that the back of the car was black with the smoke.

I just said

"yeah it's done that since I bought it, I'm not sure if the exhaust is meant to be like that"

and they genuinely said

"Yes it looks standard, you could probably do with getting an adapter to make it face downward, then you wouldn't get the smoke on the back of the car"

Then they impounded the car under s59 :dead:

Fronting is all fine an good but even when your 21 for example you'll still get quoted high prices for decent cars as you've got no ncb. Which is fine if you want to drive a 1.2 for the rest of the your line.

Have you tried adrian flux? I just renewed my 172 insurance for £1300 at 20/3yrncb. No one else could get close.

True enough.

But then starting your own insurance at 21 having had a licence for 4 years is a hell of a lot cheaper than 17 with zilcho experience.

  BMW M135i
I'd debate that tbh as long as you don't loose your ncb. Keeping in the same idea of keeping a 1.2 until your 21, I bet there isn't much difference between it being cheaper in the first place due to fronting compared to the reduction in price after gaining ncb over the years.

When I started to drive I decided to bite the bullet and go on my own policy and i'm bloody glad I did, I wouldn't have a 172 now if I hadn't.

  ValverInBits
GO TPFT

honestly. Say the worst does happen and you crash and claim. You then cannot insure any of the cars you want for the next AGES.
If i'd of claimed on my first car, there is no way I could have insured my valver or my 172
