Insurance

What going on with car Insurance?
My wife and I are both 49, driving for over 30 years, full NCB, clean licence etc.
Wife has gone form a new Fiesta ST2 to a Clio 182, £208 per annum (Fiesta was about £240)
I have a new Fiesta ST2 and pay about £262 (Insured for 12000 miles per annum). I'm getting rid of it and looking at a 56 plate Civic 1.8 EX, renewal is £370???

Because statistically you’re more likely to crash the civic and have a higher claim, that’s why it costs more to insure.

That's mad! A Clio 182 and a Fiesta ST are less of a risk than a Civic? Is that because most Civic owners have a trilby and a box of tissues on the parcel shelf :grinning: ?

Think about it, a slow car, that’s not at good at braking, handling etc etc Is actually more dangerous than a performance Car with better brakes, more safety equipment etc.

As long as it’s driven sensibly, which I assume you would, being 49 with 30 years experience and no claims.

Would you rather crash in a 12 year old civic or a brand new fiesta ST?

Same applies to doing an emergency stop, fiesta will fair far better I’d imagine.

Judging by the Honda drivers round here, the only thing I’m surprised is that your premium still seems low.

We have the CR-V brigade with their fog lights permanently on, Civic drivers who seem to have all broken their indicator stalks, and Jazz drivers that think having any lights on at all, especially in the dark, is a waste of time.

If your renewal from your current insurance company is more than it should be, shop around - there's no bonus for loyalty nowadays, it's often far cheaper to get cover elsewhere than renew with the same provider.

Person on the phone from BMW Insure told me premiums have gone up across the board this year.

My BMW went up by about 20%. A friend of mine who also has a 1 series but lives in London had the same issue (comparethemarket was more expensive than the renewal quote).

With that said the Mini insurance went down by a bit.

Just go on comparison website and get the cheapest one then claim your free toy.

Its also worth asking them to turn off automatic renewals as you've been quoted a cheaper price elsewhere.

Name a realistic price and see if they can match it.

I do this every year and have never paid my renewal price. It usually goes down year on year doing it this way.

Make sure you tell them you're leaving so they put you through to the retentions team!

Did a renewal for my Fiesta and it's £270, re-did the one for a Civic with 9000 miles pa instead of 12000 and 9 years NCB (had put 8 for some reason) get quotes for £274 now!

Basically, this is how premiums are decided. The older you are, the less balls they draw.

Insurance makes sense to me, once you figure out that a £500 banger or a £10k Car. Isn’t that much in the grand scheme of an insurance claim.

And newer more expensive cars are actually less likely to crash, so makes sense for them to be cheaper.

Round here Hondas are the Africans car of choice, they can't drive for s**t! And they only go at 18mph!!!

And all this, despite the Government telling us that they were f**king all solicitors over on costs, to save every motorist £42 a year on their premium. Still they rise.

What’s so frustrating about car insurance is how they deal with claims. My other half was involved in 2 crashes in 2 weeks (yes hard to believe). She was hit twice at lights and her back is fucked. 2 years down the line we are no closer to getting any resolution. The lawyer is drawing it out and not dealing with it properly and it’s getting to us both now to the point where she’s been going to her own physio and paying out of her own pocket. I reckon we’re at least £500 down plus about £200 more on her renewal for her car insurance. I blame the lawyers as opposed to the claim culture

You know lawyers don't draw out cases for any reason. The longer the file is open, the longer it takes for them to get paid. Plus they dont get paid any more as it's all a fixed costs regime now.

If the issue is medical evidence, then this will be out of their hands. Has she been to see a medical specialist for a report yet?

Think she’s been to 3 separate ‘medical experts’ who quite frankly have all been as bad as one another. One of them didn’t even complete his opinion on it.

Ah ok, I thought the lawyers drew it out to get more money for themselves. It’s frustrating as I couldn’t really care less about the money. The fact she’s given up the gym and teaching fitness, changing her lifestyle because of this back injury. You can’t put a price on that

Mines due and it's still £935. Yet I go on go compare and can get it over £100 less, From the same company!
I'm still not paying £800 though

If the expert is guarding his prognosis, he either wants to wait to see if the injury plateaus or whether further intervention is required. There is the possibility that the two also cross over if the same injuries occurred, so both insurers will be arguing that.

I'd ask your lawyer for an update to be honest as they will be the ones who instructed the experts. I'm assuming a GP first, then an orthopaedic and possibly a pain specialist?

Well, I haven't 100% decided on a Civic yet!!
My ST is going and I need a car I can comfortably get 3 adults in for car sharing to work. I also don't want to spend more than £3000.
My wife sold her ST (did 2000 miles a year but was worried about the car being stolen or car jacked-eventually she had enough when her plate was cloned) and I bought her an old Audi TT, just as well as this happened a couple of months later, but she didn't like the TT and said she wanted another 182!!

Police didn't want to know.
I discovered what had happened a couple of days later, so there wasn't much they could do. If I wanted to take it further, I'd have to contact my insurance and claim-as I wanted to sell the car and didn't want to risk having a no fault claim on my policy, I bit the bullet and knocked £100 of the price of the car.
Bl**dy annoying, but 3 months earlier, and they'd have hit the wife's ST.
