Insurance Tips!

just read the faq at the front of this thread, and there is one glaring error,(not that im perfect)operators dont get shirty if u mess them around, certainly not at tescos anyway, not if they want their jobs. the reason being, we r carefully and rigourously checked to make sure we provide the best, most informative, polite service to our customers, even if they r somtimes rude and offensive!

isnt that the case for EVERY job though?! actually getting hold of a person that does this is rare as rocking horse!

unless u go to Richer Sounds!

Im 20 with 1 years NCB and i was paying £1400 with tesco on a pug 306 1.9 d turbo , so i used http://www.confused.comwww.confused.com , and they found me lots of very cheap quotes so i went with churchill in the end for £389 a year saving me about £70- £80 a month !

Can I make a big plea to people posting on here...

If you recommend a company post a website or telephone number along with it and save everyone alot of hassle.

Thanks

And the funny thing is, its all the same company now owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland....I work for them!

 Clio Mk1 Hybrid

does anyone know any of the companys that transfer bike ncb over to cars? as ive got 4years on the bike and no car ncb. apparentley only 20% of all insurers do this and let me guess the probably wont insure "modified" vehicles

A thing Ive managed to do a few times now with insurance peeps, is if you are telling them about mods, play dumb, for example if your putting an inductiom kit or zorst on, and they are asking "does it increase"bhp instead of saying yes a small increase play dumb and say well" im not sure dont really know anything technical about cars...etcetc." my last car I got 3 mods like this added onto my policy for free with a company i know other people have had to pay. just make sure you get a new certificate through with mods on them and your covered!

yeah but you have to be carefull with insurance companys.

saw an artical on a girl that bought a VW golf with alloys on that the sales person said where standard equipment so that when the insurance company asked if it had any "extras" on or still standard she said "standard", however she wrote off the car and when the insurnace comapany ascessed it they said "sorry but you didnt tell us about the alloys and alloys are not standard on that car".....she got nothing for it???? :(

Simon.

I hate insurance cos......

Shed probably get nothing for the wheels but i cant honestly see an insurance company not insuring someone (which is technically illegal unless youve got means to cover yourself) just because they never mentioned, through no fault of their own, that the wheels werent OEM.

Well the artical said that because she had not told them of the wheels being an extra item that she was not covered for the car??

it said that she now had a scrap car sitting on her driveway.

Simon.

I have also been told this. Technically if you fit an aftermarket gearnob you may invalidate your insurance. Remember, ignorance is no defence. I dont think anyone would refuse to payout in the gearnob case but start adding exhausts, filters, etc and they will ask themselves why youve done it -> to make it faster -> a chance to avoid a payout.

The only advise Id give to people is if you are the main driver, insure it in your name. If you cant afford to, then you cant afford the car. I have a friend who did that and someone actually asked his neighbour "Hey, whos is that car?" They said it was his and he got a letter the next week asking him to confirm he really was the main driverIMO youd have to be a total mug to pay £4800 insurance for any car, nevermind a clio! No offence intended but why not drive a lower risk car for a year til it comes down?

As I say, this is not meant to offend anyone!

Dunc

Ps. My renewal went UP this year ??? I tried confused and they couldnt find anyone to quote! LOL!

Hey guys new member here, getting rid of my much loved Fiesta Zetec S in August for a year old 172 cup, cant wait!! Got a few quotes the lowest I can get is from Elephant 19 two years no claims, my mum as a second gets it to £1670 or thereabouts, cant remeber exactly, does this sound good to you?

i am 23, got a clio 1.2 16V Reg51. Insurance 400 (full com) 1100 excess fees if claim with Norwich Union (9month = 1 year NCB) included 1 year NCB

do you think it is cheap?

 don't

yea id say that quite cheap on a newish car but am i right in thinking ur only paying for 9 months????

u try lots of other places, or work out how much it would be 4 the full 12 months policy?

If its not "Standard" its usually a Mod and should be declared, at least during the telephone conversation. All the calls are recorded anyway (they say some, but I believe they get them all).

Some insurers like Admiral go so far as making distinctions about "Optional" Extras as well, like say "Leather Seats", SunRoof, Cup Packs etc... some of these can increase or lower your policy (depending on what they are) even if they are Factory fitted.

If in doubt Declare it.

One problem ive had is i tried ringing renault insurance who im with, what about if i wanted to do certain mods to my car (1.2 dynamique). at first they gave me a quote and it took the piss (bout 500 more just for lowering and induction kit), but they said would go down when im 21 (in a month or so). So i asked if they could give me a quote for when im 21, to see if there worth getting, but they wouldnt as they said ive already got an account with them, so couldnt change my details.

Any ideas how to get round this? As renault gave me the best quote so far anyway at 875 as they gave me an extra year ncd if i stayed with them after the first free year without a claim.

Id just like to add another good tip to what have been said, and this came from someone who have worked for many insurance companies..

God knows only why...but girls/ladies get cheaper car insurance then men,

Any male who has their other half as a second driver then try it the other way around.... I know it may hurt some male pride being second on the insurance policy but it saves some cash.. beleive me!!!!

Put this to the test and let us all know..
be warned tho... http://forum.cliosport.net/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=5&TopicID=115791&PagePosition=1http://forum.cliosport.net/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=5&TopicID=115791&PagePosition=1

Also remember when they ask how long youve been driving/had a license - this includes your provisional license so most cases should be from when you are 17.

Got my 172 insured with Norwich union for £575 fully comp with business use. Ive got 5 years NCB

Ring around every time. They are free phone numbers! Never write off old insurers,

When it gets down to £200 you are old . Buy a mk1 cortina. Or burn your car for a laugh.

 Megane 225 baby! :)

For all the ladies out there, try Diamond http://www.diamond.co.ukwww.diamond.co.uk or call them 0870 549 2500.

I have now declared all my mods - lowered, induction kit and s/s exhaust and it only cost me £56.70 extra on top of my renewal, which I was most impressed with :) and they were sooooo much cheaper than any other insurers even when I hadnt declared the mods!

Im with http://www.belldirect.co.ukwww.belldirect.co.uk

Same stable as diamond and elephant yet yield different results. You can really play around with the quotes. Adding my parents on wiped 300 off my premium. I got it for £630 full comp, £100 excess on a 1.6rt, with no no claims. My brother managed to get his Gold GTi thru them pretty cheap too in his early 20s.

Sorry if this sounds stupid I am buying a 182 and getting the cup packs fitted, i take it this is classed as a modification then???

Just dont tell them your a model, p**n star etc. Occupation makes a large difference with some companies.

IE: MODEL == RICH == MONEY TO BUY COCACINE == ALWAYS HALF CUT == NOT IN CONTROL OF CAR

IT JOBS ARE LOW RISK, AS FARMERS. Just use your imagination!

Annual milage makes a small difference. Quoting online: if you enter 6999 instead of 7000, the computer takes this as a dirrent banding, whereas on the phone the c**t of an agent would round it up to 7000.

A good trick is to do online quotes using different scenarios to find out which options lower and raise the qoute, its just a computer remember. Although this will take many quotes its worth it. MAKE SURE YOU DONT USE YOUR OWN NAME!

Location of vehicle: Its on a driveway!!!, not the street.

POSTCODE: High crime areas naturally cost more. If youve got a ma and pa in a nice area you could insure it at their address, as long as its not too far away, make sure it is nicer. Also make DAMN SURE your credit card is registered at the address you insure it at.

Things such as regular use of another car can alter the price.

Other Drivers. With some insurance companies registering another regular drive such as your dad can LOWER the cost, depending on various factors such as their occupation.

ALWAYS DECLAIR MODIFICATIONS. DO NOT LIE. If you roll your car into a petrol taking which carreers off the road onto a runway and into the path of a 747 on takeoff, there will almost certainly by an insurance investigator! and they will inspect whats left of your car!

 Fiesta ST

Does anyone know what norwich union are like on alloys? ive jus got some 16" alloys instead of my standard 14". bigger wheels actually make the car slower in acceleration, but more attractive to steal i guess, so im not sure what to expect.

By using the advise on this thread ive just got my insurance down from the original renewal of £430 to a rather more wallet friendly £356. Thats with my zaust and induction kit declared. Excellent :)

 LOTS!

Mk2 172, 2001.

 RenaultSport Clio 172 Mk2

Just change from Tesco to Greenlight (Through Highway).

52 plate Mk2 172
27 years old
4 yrs NCB
tints/lowered 40mm
6 points
1 claim + 2 motoring convictions (CD10/SP30)

£799 + £375 excess. Very happy considering other specialist insurers like Flux/Performance Direct/HIC all wanted over £1000!!

Strangely Tesco were the next cheapest with £919, but they wanted an extra £160 if I wanted to change the exhaust and a £700 excess!!

 Clio 1.4 Fidji

Heres the tip of the century. want to drive any car and still pay quite cheap insurance ?

Buy 5 really really cheap cars, get your self registered as a car trader. Apply for car trader insurance.

mine was £380 Norwich Union Direct .... full NCB :D u should also try RAC as they have just taken over the AXA business and offering good discounts at the minute trying to keep the business.... Good Luck
