Insuring a track car as 2nd car?

M.C..

ClioSport Club Member
I am playing with the idea of getting another 182 or 172 and converting it to a road legal track car with probaly cage, seats harnesses, suspension, no airbags usual sort of spec, so would need to be a modified policy.
I currently insure my meg 250 as my everyday car (with greenlight) so got my NCB on that.

how do people go about insuring a track car do you have to start a policy with 0 NCB or is there a way around it to use NCB on both policys as only one car would be used at a time, admiral multicar would be no good because of modifications.

Thanks

We can mirror your NCB from your main policy on the megane to the clio meaning you get the benefit of full NCB on both policies. Plus if you can reduce the mileage of the Clio to below 5000 (hopefully can with you having the 250 for daily use) this would lead to a very competitive quote.

If you wanted to PM me your number id happily call you and run an indication quote through on monday?

i know your megane is with us, but for other people in the same situation we can mirror the NCB from your daily driver...the main car doesnt have to be insured with us to qualify.

That's really interesting - most people wont mirror the NCB, just give you a bit of a discount

My main car (Passat) has my 10+ years NCB on it but they wont mirror that onto the Clio so it costs me a fortune.
Clio definitely does less than 5k a year but adrian flux still wanted £650 for it (I'm 33, no points or convictions) lol

Both are up for renewal in March so I'll give Greenlight a call

I was gonna give these guys a go - http://www.keithmichaels.co.uk/specialist-car-insurance/2nd-car-insurance/ as thats what they seem to specialise in

I was also wanting to know the answer to this, if I have my BMW as my daily but use my Clio as a Summer Fast Road/Track Car, can they do like a short term policy where they know I'm only driving it for 6months of the year on the road and the rest it is stored..

With a Rollcage and Race Seats and a modified engine, I want to get the most reasonable quotes possible.. Anyone have any idea?

Could he limit the mileage to say 1000 per year just to cover driving to and from the track? Or does the track mileage (on a private road/track) have to be included in the annual mileage?

Sorry if that's a daft question

My Clio is insured with David Auden insurance as a modified vehicle, all bits and pieces declared and also covers me for road rallies and its £375 tpft

Not sure if they cover just track cars though but might be worth a call.

Yes we can definitely help. We are happy to mirror Ncb fully.....it's better from our point of view thst you have a daily car as it keeps the mileage of your clio and it becomes less of a daily commuter and into a pleaseure/weekend toy.

Drop me a PM in march when its due and ill happily run a quote for you. I think you will be very happy with the mirrored NCB quote.

Rather than do short term insurance which normally works out more expensive you could do an annual policy with a lower mileage. The price would probably work out similar to a 6 month policy but would give you the benefit of being able to use the car occasionally during winter to keep the wheels moving.

plus it would be covered all year round in case it got stolen or damaged while off road.

The only way for the insurer to record the mileage is on the milometer reading so there wouldn't be a realistic way to record what you did on track.

To be honest a track day will probably only add 75-150 miles to the car so if you covered for an extra 1000 miles on your policy it would be ideal. The difference between 3000 and 4000 miles on a quote wouldn't be much at all.....we can also cover your car on track from £45 per day as well.

Do you cover Clio's now Neil?

You didn't when I rang in May.

We have always covered the cliosport models but we had a problem with the 172 cup model before. We have new schemes now that can cover the cup model so can definitely help with a quote for you next time.

The pic in your avtar is a silver car....excuse my ignorance but weren't all clio cups blue??

Thanks for your quick reply, is this a sort of service you can offer come the summer time when I put it back on the road?

No problem you are welcome.

Definitely will be able to help we have 3 different underwriters offering the NCB mirror and track day cover option so will happily be able to quote come the summer.

Just wanted to confirm that on our mirrored Ncb policy you will also start to build up a separate no claims bonus on your track day/weekend car. So eventually you would end up with two sets of Ncb.

also the cover isn't like some stripped down Motorsport policies....with us you would still get windscreen cover, legal cover, courtesy car and EU cover. All your mods are covered like for like as well.

I was with REIS which didnt cover windscreens etc I will give you a call as I want a quote for a standard 172 to use for sprinting.
Cheers

Neil - can you guys cover cars with full roll cages in? My clio cup is obviously a track car so is very modified. A lot of companies I ring won't insure roll cages any more :(

Greenlight gave me a belter of a quote on my fully caged 182 with all the mods listed. Sub £600 @ 22 years old. ;)

I've used Competition Car Insurance for mine this year. Is limited to 1000 miles, but in reality I've used the car on the road 5 times in the last 10 months. It's a complete waste of time really, but you have to have it. I started my ncb from scratch as well with them. I think it's come in at about £220 for the year.

I think i'll shop around in March when it's due for renewal, but it's so highly modified that I really struggled last year.

I'd much prefer a daly policy or something where i'd just pay for the days i use it!

I'm happy to help mate everyone on here are always great to deal with so ill do what I can to assist

Just a quick note to say Motorsport specific insurance companies do road legal track car cover limited millage, trackday cover etc.

Only downside of the motorsport insurance is that you dont normally gain NCB, plus the cover is usually stripped back to exclude things like windscreen cover and foreign travel etc. Its often cheaper to look at a regular modified road policy with reduced mileage for a car used for amateur track days.

Also some of the Motorsport insurers will require you to hold a current MSA licence and compete in regular events.

Tis true that.

Yeah I want to get european cover (ring trips) and windscreen cover etc... Motorsport insurance is fine but if something goes through the windscreen while I'm out having a weekend blast I don't want the £££'s bill lol

Worth noting that all you with rollcages and seats heading out to the ring this year for TF days may run into problems at the barrier if they are of a certain design - that's if you can find insurance that doesn't excluse the Ring anyway!

CCC were fine with me not having a motorsprt license, but they did want to see that i was a member of a motor club.

Yeah been reading about that - it seems to be door bars higher than dash, unpadded cages and bucket seats that wrap around stopping you from looking to the side.
I'm waiting to see what people say who go in the first half of the year.
