intermitting from 3 cylinders to 4

Car  Clio 172 Cup
hey folks my clio 172 cup is running a bit rough. its sortof running on 3 cylinders then onto 4 then onto 3 again.

changed the plugs one was duff, one was covered in oil and the other two were ok.

still no difference checked the coil and it seems to be working ok getting spark

needing to wait for new leads on monday could it be the leads?

I reckon you are right, mine was the same. Start it up in the dark, get someone to watch the engine while its revved and you may see the responsible lead arcing off the inlet manifold.

Yeah I had this problem twice in my 172.... Replaced all 4 leads to make sure and so far (touch wood) it's been the only problem ive had in 3 and a half years of ownership!

Its because the chance of nipping a lead when putting the manifold back on is high, especially when you rush it the night before a trackday;) least they redesigned it for the 197/200.

the way they designed it was poor lol as you cant really pull a lead out of the plug socket to see if there is a change in note if you get me. Took out at coil when running (with pliers lol) are there was a spark from all but one wasnt as strong so i took lead off and popped a spark plug onto the coil and it sparked so heres hoping

p.s this is kirstys man

I've got all brand new leads bar cylinder number 1 (g/box side)in the garage. if you need 2,3 or 4 i will post for a £5 each , save you buying a new set @ £60 if any use. I bought new leads, nipped one, then bought another set so they've done 250miles round Oulton Park and thats it. Genuine Renault part BTW

Mine does that, change plugs, leads and coil pack and it still does it! Crank sensor next and if that doesnt fix it, new injectors i think

This happened to me, got new injectors, still the same and then I discovered the new ht lead was to blame. If you do get injectors Eurocarparts are about £160 a set, I've got three spare if you need an odd one (PM me), but get them tested before you spend if I was you.

have you changed anything prior to the problem appearing ? silly question but your leads are connected the correct order aren't they (talking from experience here haha )

Ive got a spare set of ht leads. Diagnostics came up with flywheel sensor so I'll try that. I might have those injectors of you though buddy if all else fails.

yeah just happened out of the blue. the leads are correct never changed

i would always do a test afore injectors get replaced hoping leads solves it

This is the way i went just a month ago:

changed the leads, coilpack , no cure. Plugs were only 5K old (NGK). It was an injector ! btw my car has 70K on the clock.

oh yeah, if the car starts up allright then forget the cranksensor

Kyle, take the fuel rail and the injectors off as one. crank the car over and watch the spray from the injectors. The buggered one should be obvious!

you can get a injector tester (basically a bulb what you connect to the injector and it lights up if you are getting a pulse). We used one after pissing around looking for a broke wire from the ECU for 2 hours lol

Kyle, ill hook my rstuner up if you want and diagnose it if you get stuck

Cheers mate, had it on the diagnostics at NWP but nothing really came up! Ill bare it in mind mate!

Did this, all four of them sprayed ! It does NOT show if one is a bit limb, inaccurate spray maybe going on or the like.. Mine was bust but still sprayed

Just goes to show that this test is'nt fullproof

What did you do? Replace all four?

Nope, the sparkplug on cilinder four looked nasty so we switched injectors around and the problem went to the other cilinder. Busted injector found and replaced. Just left the other three in there. If it ain't broken; do'nt touch it
